Re: no title

Did you have DMV run a check on the HID or the registration? If the guy you got the boat from was not the legal owner, I think you learned an expensive lesson. If he is the legal owner, you'll have to go stand on his doorstep until he provides you with the title, or a signature on a Lost Title Application. Personally, I think you lost two sleds, and now own something you won't be able to legally do anything with.

Re: no title

It can be done but it usually is not easy. And don't expect any help from the DMV as most states have laws that prohibit purchasing or selling any vehicle or vessel without a title. I believe that you normally have to apply for abandoned title in order to get the name of the person on the title. Hopefully it's not 3 people removed because you are obligated to contact them and they could claim their property.

It is an expensive lesson that a lot of us have done once. Bought a camp trailer once that way for way cheap. Didn't do me any good with no title. Ended up selling for the same price because I would get so mad looking at it on my property.

Re: no title

for a small fee the dept. of watercraft, with the ohio dnr will do a title search.
just for fun i had it done,it showed every one that titled the boat from when it left the dealer.
they just need the state reg number, and the hin number if you can find one

Re: no title

Send the seller a registered letter, return reciept requested.
That gets you his signature officially linked to his address.
Thats how I managed to get a new title issued for mine.
The Enviromental police actually wanted a copy of his drivers license but he wouldn't respond, so I tricked him instead.

Not sure where you are from, but in NY, it's a long uphill battle, but can be done. Figure a year or more to get it cleared up. I did it with a motorcycle a while back. It was free and I was too young to know different. Applied for abandoned title, had to send a registered return reciept requested letter to previous owner. Got a bounced reply from the post office, went back to DMV, need to go to a police station to do a VIN check and search, etc. Long story short, I finally got a title after a bit over a year, decided the bike wasn't worth the time I would put into fixing it up - and donated it to the Vietnam Veterans association.

If it's THE boat you want, go for it. If not, look into parting it out to get your money back. Please don't sell it to someone else, or we'll be giving out the same advice to that individual. Good luck with it.
