Re: no tach, rectifier replaced, nothing

New tach is here. Put temp wires on it and ran motor and tach works great. Back to possible stator issue. Only getting 15+ volts at idle between the yellows of the stator. Voltage goes up with RPM increase but I dont have 25+ volts as someone else posted I should. 1996 johnson 88 special. Battery is charging but I dont have 14+ volts to it as others said I should. More like 12.89 at idle and a little higher as RPM increase. Rectifier is new. Is this all good for the 88 Special?

Your numbers are good. The battery voltage reading will vary depending on battery and battery type, state of charge of the battery, and accessory load on the battery.

If you want to measure the stator output across the yellow wires, you have to disconnect everything else and test at idle with a DVA meter that is compatible with the instructor's meter.

Re: no tach, rectifier replaced, nothing

Ok got to run in the water after new tach install. Note: carbs have been rebuilt, new filter and fuel lines new fuel.

Boat was hard to start, starter would turn engine over then disingage. I thought it was due to back pressure and when I tilted it out of water she turned over and fired off quickly. Batttery is fully charged(only two weeks old) I'll check connections again. Boat ran good, with two on board ran up to 5300 rpms, 32.8 mph. All good. Went to pick up a buddy in a creek and idleing down his creek boat was dropping rpm slowly. By the time we got to his house it stalled out. Ended up having to adjust idle up to get it to run. Checked timing with light at idle and it would only run if it was around 8 degrees with the idle screw turned in alot. Primer bulb would not stay hard all the time. Have to check all lines for leaks. A note: Coils all look bad, cracks and gouges in them. Could boat get to running warm and coils heat up and start cutting out? I can get my hands on 4 used good coild for $40. I think I'll change all four and try agoain. Any other thoughts. Ran boat back to ramp and it seemed ok but would hestitate at first and then run good but only to right at 5000 rpm. Go home and it was running at 2000 rpm on muffs on trailer. Readjusted timing back to where it was and idle also. My thoughts are power pack or coils.

If the coils are that old and have cracks all over them sure they will cause problems.
I have seen coils with no cracks arc to the block but sound like it was running fine on the muffs.

It has stumbled on the muffs so I dont think it is just on the water. Really was great when we first started, ran for about 10 minuted then went south.
