I know many think their junk, I get it. I bought the boat any how.

NEW carb, NEW fuel pump, compression 150-152 across all 4, NEW coil wires plugs cap rotor, still get gas shooting out of carb and plugs dry.
Timing checked and TDC is correct. Valves opening and closing, still plugs are dry.
Took pipe plug off intake manifold and can see fuel.

Even searched and searched but noone posts when they got it figured out. Some posts just leave ya hanging for conclusions.

Any suggestions?

What year, and what model engine. There were a few 4cyl models. Your either not getting fuel or spark or both. You didn't mention replacing points or condenser?

Which merc 4 cylinder you working on? Engine serial number is best.
youve confirmed you have a spark with a spark gap tester or holding a spark plug against a ground? Try turning the distributor while cranking ?
fuel shooting out of carb do you mean you get two stream out of accelerator pump nozzles when you pump the throttle ?

Sorry. It's a 87 merc 165 the mercs idea of Frankenstein haha.
Yes points and condenser were replaced and adjusted. Definitely have good spark after rotor and cap replaced.
Old carb shot gas out the top, that prompted me to replace new, but same thing with plugs dry.

Serial number isn't readable on the tag. But it's a 87 224.
Fuel shoots out of where pencil is pointing. I used the old carb as reference.
I can see the fuel spray from the nozzles doing it by hand

How old is the gas? Old gas goes bad, especially if it's got ethanol in it. What's the story with it? Did you just get it, or you have it previous years, and had running last year? Has it ran this year yet?

I by passed the original tank and there is a clear inline filter where I'm able to see gas flow from gas can.
I was vedimitlly told all it needs is a oil change. He swore up and down. He bought 2 new bats, and you can clearly tell the outdrive was rebuild because I found the old gaskets and can see the new ones on. He claimed he did to. He did upgrade the heat exchanger 4inch.
Usually no I don't take peoples word but seeing the new bats, gaskets, and all the documentation along with old parts kept for reference, he seemed to have taken care of it.

I bypass the original tank because I didn't want to chance the bad gas or any crud if any. I wanted

No it hasn't ran for me yet. Shoot gas out the carb and replaced what's listed

Just doesn't explain dry plugs with gas clearly getting into the intake manifold. There is a pipe plug you can take out to visually see gas IS there. Even with no spark which definitely has, plugs should be soaked. All 4 plugs bone dry.

Float level? In the NEW carb?
I have no idea without taking the new carb apart. This wasn't rebuilt by me, but bought new from I5 in CA. I can confirm the carb tag off old matchs the new carb. Doesnt mean much I know but without taking a new carb apart I have no idea. I guess I'll have to check and get back. I'm still baffled even if flooding my plugs shouldn't be dry.

Service the points, set the dwell, and the timing

Check the fuel in a clear container. Make sure its clear, with a bluish ting and not cloudy and doeant separate

Your 470 has a news stand full of issues, however its a simple motor needing compression, fuel and spark at the right time

I did points for the first time earlier in the season, and I accidentally wired the condenser connection upside down which caused a short on the distributor breaker plate. No spark for me when that happened.

I'm going to take the carb apart and check the float. I do owe that to those who are trying to help. I'll report back.
And I'll double check the dwell. These are atleast starting points. Pun not intended

Okay, how about getting some gas in each cylinder thru the spark plugs hole then throw the plugs in. If your getting spark, then your going to get some sign of firing, sneezing, something.

sounds as though the valve timing is off, what with fuel spewing out the carb and all , however could just be ignition timing is way off

based on the info provided thus far it seems you have never seen this engine running?
