i have had this issue a couple times, tried to do the tests and then it resolved itself and ran great for months. Now its a no start. i did the tests in the evinrude book. the stop circuit is ok, the charge coil puts out 120 volts, which is lower than the 150 spec in the book. checked the charge coil resistance and that was in spec. the 3 parts in this system, where do i start?

Re: no start 88 spl

Why do yo seem to think ignition right off the bat? When I bought my 88 spl last year from PO it was hard to start until I cleanen fuel system chgd plugs and put in new primer bulb. It has its tricks that must be followed but when done in order she cranks right up.
Have checked for other issues?

First thing you do is determine if it is an ignition problem or a fuel problem, then troubleshoot from there.

Agree with seahorse: You haven't mentioned if you have cranking spark or not. On all 4 cyls? Also, whether the plugs are wet or dry when cranking. If the stator is only putting out 120 volts, you may find erratic spark (or no spark) to the plugs. Keep in mind that engine must crank at least 200-250 rpm's in order to fire the ignition. A weak cranking battery (low cranking rpm's) will contribute to this problem.
