I have a 1972 Mercury 4hp Outboard. I have never seen it working but was told that I needed to replace the condenser and points before it would work. I have done this. I have used genuine mercury contact points but could not find a specific condenser so have used a brand new one from a ford which fit exactly. However I still can't get a spark from the plug, or the lead.

I am testing the plug and lead again the headbolt whilst turning the flywheel using an electric drill and getting no spark.

What should be my next step?

Check the kill switch.

Ah ha! Think I might have made progress. No kill switch but there is a small wire that runs from the head unit to one of the clips that bolt the cowl/cover on. I pressed this down so it was connected, spun the flywheel and I got a spark.

Now to put it back together and see if I can get it running.
