So I have a new to me 7.5 hp Mercury outboard that I just purchased, and it has no spark. Its serial number is 3280358. Any ideas where to start? The motor has been sitting, but it's in like new condition... Any help will be helpful to me.

1972 ? two cylinder . Id have a good look at the kill switch 1st . If it got no spark in both cylinders its likely to be something common to both .....kill switch maybe
Yes, 2, and I believe it had something to do with the kill switch. I now have spark. And Thanks!

suggest you read up on the ignition type... if it is a Phase maker ignition DO NOT KILL at high rpm....use down to slow then kill with kill button

phase maker points may lookdirty but they work fine.

The Phase Maker CDI.pdf In the early 1970s, Mercury introduced their first true Capacitor Discharge Ignition (CDI) system, on some of their smaller outboards. This was a true CDI, with a high voltage charge on a capacitor being dumped through the spark coil. But, this system also still had breaker points….or rather, “maker points”, which caused the spark to be generated when the contacts CLOSED (as compared to magnetos, where the spark is generated when the contacts OPEN.) These early CDI systems used high-voltage “generator coils”, which are really peculiar. How they can generate a high voltage at low RPM, and then NOT generate too high of voltage at higher RPM, is a real trick. I attempt to describe how these “generator coils” work, from an electrical perspective…….along with the rest of this “Phase Maker CDI” system.

see merc site catalog under OUTBAORD 2 stroke carb 7.5hp category #62423 for your serial # and parts list
