I have a 1974 merc 6cyl. it started when I put in the water a week ago. I went to start it yesterday and it wouldnt start. I checked for fuel and spark I have no spark to distributor from the coil. Where does the coil get its power from.
I have a 1994 Mercury 115hp. outboard. Iput it in the water a week ago and when I went back yesterday it would not start. I checked for fuel and spark. I have no spark from coil to distributor. Where does the coil get it power from thanks.
I just had a very similar issue with a 150 V6 VR4 model. On some of the older model mercs there they had something called an Idle Stabilizer. Best I can tell from everyone on this site is that they are useless... Anyway, if they short out they have a tendency to kill the bias circuit between the switchboxes. Sure enough, I removed my Idle Stabilizer, replaced both the switchboxes, and now I have fire to all the coils. Hope this helps....

I suspect you have a 1974, not 1994 as the 94 didn't have a distributor. The power for the coil comes from the switchbox, mounted on the inside of the front engine bracket. You need to check that it has power on the Red and White leads (with the key ON). If it does, then get back here for a more thorough test procedure.
