No spark on half the motor!

The 1982 evinrude 150 has no spark on its starboard side! Left side appears ok! Before I get into unknown to me territories, I’m thinking the power pack! Should I exchange packs with the good side, or maybe switch plug wires with the good side for a rather easy test! Also, if it’s the stator, wouldn’t it control spark on both sides of the engine? Know very little about the trigger, at this point! One last thing, the 6 coils appear to be melting! I’m thinking that can’t be good! BTW, compression is between 94 and 100 on all cylinders! Oh, I have a ‘76 evinrude 200 parts motor! Anything interchangeable? Thanks!

Check to make sure the shift switch is adjusted correctly.
Don't remember which bank of cylinders it shuts down, but I believe it's the starboard bank

I would have a look at pistons / rings by removing bypass covers.----The 94 PSI is NOT good in my opinion.

Sorry, shift switch?? Not familiar with that term! Where might that be located???

Usually located near shift cable. You might check the parts diagrams at crowleymarine or other site, to see if you have a shift assist switch and where it is located.

Update: the original motor was a 1988, 88 SPL! So the controller is 1988, hooked up to the ‘82 150hp. From what I’ve been able to find, the shift switch is in the controller, if there is one, correct? Also, I switched power packs and from side to side and got no spark from either! Switched them back and spark again on port side, but nothing from starboard side! Attached are a couple photos, inside of my controller and the other of one coil, which is indicative of all 6! I don’t want to randomly change parts! I’ve done that before! Gets expensive!

There is a ---- "Neutral start switch " -----In the control box.---It has nothing to do with loosing spark !-----It has the function of not allowing the starter to crank if motor is in gear.------There is no shift switch on the linkages on the motor itself !!

The shift switch that they originally talked about is a switch that kills half the outboard momentarily when you put it in gear making it easier on the gearcase.

Not sure where it's located or if you have one.

When Chris said near the shift cable he ment back at the motor.

It amazed me, but when I got the engine running initially, I checked for spark! No spark on the starboard side! I know on a mercruiser, there is a shift interrupter switch that momentarily cut power so it can be shifted into gear easier! Didn’t know about any possibility of one being on an evinrude! And at this point, I’m a bit confused! After switching the power packs back and forth, there is still no spark on the starboard side! The good power pack from the port, doesn’t provide spark when swapped to starboard! My theory is that it is something upstream of the power pack since the good power pack wouldn’t provide spark either! If the stator is at fault, could it still provide spark to the port side!

Some Johnson / Evinrude outboards use a shift interrupt switch.-----But not your model !

I have to agree! I’ve looked and looked! Don’t see anything in the suggested location that looks anything like this alleged switch!

In summary, swapped power packs! No spark on either one! Swapped them back and the port side hood one still has spark! The starboard bad one still has no spark! Seems like I have a bad power pack and something also that should be feeding it, like a bad wire, connection, or what else? Also, any ideas on when Evinrude implemented this shift interupter switch???

TROUBLESHOOTING THE TIMER BASE
NO FIRE ON ONE BANK OR 1 CYLINDER

1. Disconnect the Timer Base connector for the side not firing and check the resistance from the White to the Green, Purple and Blue wires. The reading should be approximately 18 ohms to each wire.

2. Disconnect the Timer Base connector for the side not firing and check to see if the pins have gotten pushed back either in the pack connector or the new Timer Base.

3. Remove the pins from the connectors and see if a pin is broken on the pack or the new Timer Base.

4. Check the DVA voltage from the White to the Green, Purple and Blue wires. You should have at least 0.5 volts.

5. Check the DVA voltage from the Brown to the Brown/Yellow Stator wire. You should have at least 150 volts.

6. Swap the power packs side to side and verify the problem stays on the same sid
