I have a 87' Starcraft Islander V221 with a 130. Today boat died out in river and towed back. While being towed saw that the Rotor with cap off was not turning while engine being cranked. Sounds like a broken timing chain.
My question is
1. How hard is it to change while engine in boat.
2. Is there another possible issue?

We were running about 4200 RPMs at the time. 3rd day on Ohio River.
Thanks

You wouldn't be the first one to experience a broken distributor shaft.

Removed shaft already. All looks good. Did observe rocker valvesnot moving through oil cap. That's what makes me thing belt ( manual reads chain).
Thanks for response.

Broken gear is certainly possible - especially if you have a fiber gear.

But there is neither a chain nor belt.

What manual are you using???

Here's a pic of what it would look like. This pictures an aluminum gear, but you may have a fiber gear:

It's a selco manual.
Fiber gear? I had a 79' Mustang with a 2.8 and a Nylon Timing gear.
What were they thinking.?
Is it easy to fix? Replace with a Full metal Gear?
Thanks for the pic of what I am against.

bahaha, you need to start a new thread with your problem, not hijack someone elses thread with your completely different question.

To comment on your exact question kyles v221 islander, The gear was easy to get to but I am finding it hard to remove the gear. I also think it might be just as hard to get it back on.

Don S. Please refer to the top of this thread to see Kyles question is directly related to changing the "timing chain/belt/gear.

Go to the auto store and get a gear puller and installer.
I myself have always used a large screw driver and soft mallet. But there are times when they are stuck on. And a gear puller designed for this will work. If worse goes to worse, the gear will crack. But I believe even under the nylon type there is a pot metal base.

So you are stating a shop will have to press it off and on?
Looking at the picture it appears it could be puled with a standard puller.

Re: No spark and NO ROTOR TURN

Thanks for your replys, I will try the gear puller. There is a metal ring at the inside diamater. If the puller does not work, it seems the CAM Shaft will need to be pulled and the gear pressed off and a new one pressed on. Ill let you know how it goes.

The gear WILL need to be pressed on IN A PRESS, as there is NO WAY of holding the cam forward. And be sure to KEEP THE LIFTERS IN ORDER as they MUST go back on the same lobe! And replacement gears are aluminum.

Umm The cam does not just float. It has to be held down with a seal and a hold down flange. So everyone is stating the entire camshaft needs to be removed to do this? Dunno seems like a lot of work to just replace a small part.
In my 30 years with engines I have never heard of this.
Maybe I am missing something here. Are marine engines so much different than car engines?

Re: No spark and NO ROTOR TURN

Pulling the engine to remove the cam to replace the timing gear.....it does seem like an engineering fubar!

I had a 1970 nova that the engine needed to be lifted up with a cherry picker to replace the oil pan.

Well, it is starting to look like the answer to the question is "NO, its not easy to replace the timing gear" Kyles v221 islander.

But I will have the definative answer tomorrow.

Re: No spark and NO ROTOR TURN

All,

Thanks for your help! I was able to remove the gear without pulling the cam. However, it was a bit of an operation. I had to drill and tap two (2) 1/4 -20 holes into the metal "pot" at the Inner diameter of the fiber gear. It was critical not to violate the CAM Shaft so it was a little tricky with a hand drill. I was then able to use the wheel puller to remove the fiber gear.

I then needed to drill and tap a 1/4-20 hole into the center of the cam shaft and press the new aluminum gear onto the cam.

With the rotor now turning I can se the timing (tomorrow) and hopefully be back on the water before the end of the week.

I hope kyles v221 islander is back on the water or this information is helpful.
