I have a 1987 Johnson 200 hp V6 outboard it runs like a top has good compression good spark good fuel delivery the problem I'm having is when I turn the key off the engine keeps running it is not dieselIng it just will not shut off the only way I can get it to shut off is to disconnect the fuel line and wait for it to run out of gas please help I've checked the wiring and the ignition switch is new that doesn't mean good

with key OFF engine idling wiggle twist turn all wires or cable you can access. IF the engine reacts (Dies) inspect wiring closely for a break.

Could be a crappy switch....but I agree, do a continuity test on the kill wire from the box to its grounding spot.

I will check that I checked continuity back to the power pack and I had continuity but I believe it gets its ground from the neutral safety switch where I later did find an issue I'm wondering if a faulty neutral safety switch could cause the no shut off problem

Neutral safety switch has to do with the starter only.-----Look for a black / yellow stripe wire.----Perhaps it is disconnected somewhere.

That is the wire I checked for continuity all the way back to the power pack continuity test tell me why is good

I have a couple employees like that.
Are you testing through the key switch or just the wire.

ground the power pack kill wire(s) if no effect power pack is defective

if engine dies... back track and find the missing ground back to the key

OK so what I have found now I put it brand new Johnson ignition switch on same issue when I shut it off now it lowers RPMs but still doesn't shut off I tested the black and yellow wire for ground it has ground until I turn the key on as soon as the key is turned on I lose ground on the kill wire black with the yellow stripe

I'm thinking rpm drop is because your dropping one bank and the other power pack is not cutting off. Figure out which one it is and replace it or swap them and see if the problem follows.

Wiring error. Find it. Before a Power Pack is needlessly changed.
Could also be a loose and corroded connection at either end of the STOP wire.
