no reverse

Hi guys, ive got a 25 hp, johnson, 1998 j25rec, love the motor, but it wont go in reverse now, any ideas? thanks alot

What were you doing just prior to it not working. Need more of the story on this one.

mmmmmm thats a tough ? i dont put it in reverse very often, i went fishing the other day, and needed it, the lever will only go as far as in neutral. forward is fine,

Well, if you have the shift handle on the side you can check to see that it has not come loose.

You can pull the water inlet screens and gain access to the shift rod and manually shift the rod to see if you can engage reverse. Do this with motor off while spinning prop by hand.

Drain the lower unit and see if you get metal and/or water out.
