No reverse...

After reading everything I could find in this forum and following all previously stated suggestions, checks, measurements, and assistance given to others, I have found that the shift shaft of the lower unit had fallen down enough to disengage from the upper unit shift stirrup. Everything I read says I am ahead to remove the complete outdrive before removal of the lower unit, but I can not find anything that explains why...
Question: Can you tell me what the fight will be when trying to either remove or re-install the lower unit 'without' removing the complete stern drive?

Re: No reverse...

You can just drop the lower half of the drive absolutely. It is good maintenance to pull the whole drive yearly, check alignment, bellows, grease u-joints and gimbal bearing. Sounds like you may be missing the washer on the splined shift shaft on the lower half. Did you already separate the drive to work on it and maybe didn't put back with that washer?

put a piece of plywood or something under the skeg so if it accidentally drops too far on you won't damage it.

Thanx Eric...
No, I just purchased the boat and am checking and fixing what isn't right... Have never had anything other than a little 10hp Johnson.
Ya know, one of those, "The price is right". :)

If "I" just bought the boat then the WHOLE drive would be coming off not just the lower. To see how It's been treated as well as a full tune up oil change, fuel filters, drive lube change. Don't assume the last guy did it before selling the boat.
Why would he, he's dumping it.
