No reverse

I installed a pair of merc 350's into a 25ft wellcraft and for the life of me the thing will not shift into reverse.The shift shafts are new and work fine.( when you turn it with your finger the reverse will engage) I have adjusted the shift cables all the way in and back out, the reverse will not engage.Now that I think about the cables are probably 15years old.Time for a new set?

Hopefully your talking Alpha since it has shift shafts.
The cables are probably worn inside and causing excess movement which won't allow the shifter to reach both forward and reverse.
Replace the cables.

The outdrives are the old Alpha(late 70s)

Can you disconnect the shift cables at the engine and by pushing and pulling the inner cable go into both forward and reverse?
