NO REVERSE, ONLY FORWARD

I have a 1971 80hp 800 Mercury Motor. <br /><br />Shifting into forward works fine but when shifting into reverse it still runs in forward but faster. The shift mechanism works fine in both directions. IF I disconnect the shift mechanism and work manually it still does not allow me to shift into reverse. It's like it is not catching a gear or something?<br /><br /><br />What could this be?

Is this happening after you had the leg off? It sounds like the shift shafts are out of alignment.<br />Eric

The problem occurred after hitting a rock.<br /><br />I pulled the lower unit off, but only after the shifting problem occured.
