No reverse on a 87 cobra

My outdrive is now not going into reverse, It kinda clicks a little. It goes into forward ok. What could be wrong? How much is a lower unit rebuild usally if I take it off myself?

You probably just need a new lower shift cable and some proper adjustments, not a new lower.<br />You need to do some troubleshooting and testing, way before you start parting with thousand dollar bills.

The reverse shifer cable seems to be working good, How does the shifting system work past the shifter cable ontop of the engine?
