I just got my first boat a 1985 bayliner with volvo penta aq125b/270 motor and outdrive combo. when i got the boat home the shift cable was worn through the outer sheath and i replaced that and adjusted it, It now goes into foward and reverse but when running the engine in gear the prop does not turn. I have taken the the back cover off and the cover off the top of the transmission and turned the prop by hand with it in gear and it turns freely one way and the other way it has some resistance with the bearing and top nut turning and I pulled the bellows back far enough to see the ujoints are turning. the engine runs smooth with no funny noises or burning smells with it being shift into gear by hand at the outdrive any sugestions on what could be wrong? thanks

If you see the shaft turning ,I`d check the engine coupler.

Sounds like maybe the coupler inside the drive connecting the upper box to lower unit is broken or the tip of the lower driveshaft is sheared off.

ok well it stopped raining long enough to pull the top of drive off and i found that the bearing between the ujoints and the and the engine coupler had dissinagrated along with the snap rings on the upper drive shaft letting it pull out of the coupler thanks again for the help.
