Hi I have a 1977 85hp johnson javelin.
I seem to have lost power on take off. i used to be able to pull a skier up now it dose not seem to have that take off power. the engine runs well overall and has great top speed. please tell me what do i have to do to get more take off power. what do i need to do to the motor. thanks.

Welcome to iboats!
I suspect you may have a spun hub.
Scribe a line on the prop exterior to the prop hub. If the line moves next time your out on the water. You would then have a spun hub.

Would a stingray fin make a difference. I took it off this time i went out. last time i had it on. Would that fin help me pull up a skier. The reason i took it off is the metal around the bolt hole were starting to crack.

You answered your own question. The issue is not the "foil".

Your nengine needs attention. Suspect oxygnated fuel (alcohol).

But i dont understand what you are saying. What is a "foil".
If you are refering to what i said about the cracked bolt hole around the stingray fin.

I am. Your reference to adding a "foil".

If you have cracking issues with the foil, get it OFF. That is telling you something-namely-added stress to the boat/engine you don't need.

I understand now.
But would having the foil on, would that have help me pull on ski up faster. would the foil have givenn me more take off speed?

Just trying to rule out possubly of why i could pull up a ski last time i went out and not this time. Last time i had the foil on. This time i didnt.

The foil will make it plane out faster and easier but needing one means there's something else wrong with the setup (I know, I run one!).

+1 to the spun hub check.
