I know it is recommended that when using poly resin a layer of mat be used first then a layer of woven roven. I think it was said that the mat makes a "resin rich first layer" for the roven to stick to.

Why cant roven be used alone? Poly resin is so sticky I cant imagine adhesion being a problem?

The mat is used to help you wet out the roven, and gives some bite for proper adhesion. Don't skimp on this. Mat is cheap enough.

the mat is like a sponge soaking up resin creating a fairly un-interrupted layer. if you skip it, the resin will just run through the weave of the roven leaving thin spots. you'll have pinholes in the surface where there's no resin.

give it a test try.
