Hello from Phx, AZ...

New to this forum...not new to old Merc OB's.

Picked up an 800 (78) to put on my '67 Sears 17'. Long story short.

1st run at lake...starts and idles fine...good smooth RPM to about 2800, gradual increase in throttle, engine starts to die, then either stalls or seems to run on 2 cyl. at full throttle.

Rebuilt fuel pump, carbs, new plugs, new trigger, ign coils, repaired wiring as necessary, all new fuel lines, fresh lead acid battery, excellent compression in all 4, correct prop w/good hub....back to the lake...SAME PROBLEM.

It is my understanding that these engines have a high rpm/low rpm stator that can cause this type of problem....I have other info that a bad rectifier can also create this situation. With a split stator...can I reverse connections and create a NO START situation to confirm the high speed half isn't operational? Rectifier tested "bad".

Re: NO high rpm

Go to the CDI electronics.com website and find the test for your stator's high speed winding.

Disconnect the rectifier for ign testing purposes. Replace it next chance.
