No fuel/water seperator?

As I was replacing the jimmy-rigged fuel line from the pump to the carb, I realized the supply line looks jimmy-rigged too. There is an in-line, automotive type fuel filter clamped in the line right in front of the crank pulleys (which seems wrong, because the line is cracking and even if replaced will probably crack under the clamp again ...?).
I also don't see a fuel/water seperator anywhere? Nor do I see two sets of fuel lines (or plugged fittings) to match up to a seperator?
Can anyone help me with what I may be missing or if it's even a problem?

Thanks

Re: No fuel/water seperator?

The 888 never had a water separating fuel filter on the engine itself, it was always a dealer or owner installed item. They also don't need 4 hoses to them. All it takes is 1 line from the tank to the F/W separator and one line from the filter to the fuel pump.
One other note. The 888 engine also stopped production in 1977, and your boat is a 1980 ??

Yep, and the motor is actually the '70-'72 generation. Which, apparently, is slightly different from the '73-'77

Are clamped connections in the fuel line generally acceptable under the hood of a boat? I want to install a F/W filter and it looks like they are the regular clamped connections. Does this need to be remotely located away from the engine? I'm having hoses with fittings made to go to and from the fuel pump.

Use the small "Mini" hose clamps for the fuel lines, not the big 1/2" wide hose clamps. The big ones cause air leaks.

You also don't need special hoses made to the fuel pump. The one going from the pump to the carb is a steel line. I get the straight break line tube from NAPA bend to fit and
reflare one end.

Great. I'll see if a local NAPA or Mercruiser dealer has a F/W filter and install that today. I've already had the fuel lines made -- they were cheap and hose clamps are ugly anyway!

Do I need a fuel filter between the pump and carb? I've installed the Sierra 10 micron F/W filter before the pump, but it seems like maybe there should be one right before the carb?

No, you do not want to cut that steel line.
