I have a Force 85 outboard motor. I am not sure if I hit the bottom or if the forward gear is messed up. I have reaverse. What is a spun prop? How do I check if I have a spun prop? What do I need to do to replace the forward gear?

Thanks,
NEEDHELP!!!

Re: No Forward!!!???

A spun prop is...
Ok, a prop is made of two parts. The round cylinder with the blades attached, and the part inside the cylinder. The two parts are held together by a piece or rubber which is pressed between the two parts.

When the prop strikes a hard object like a rock, the rubber "hub" is supposed to slip, to prevent severe damage to the lower unit and engine. When the rubber gets older, it can slip from just the force applied by the engine. Usually a spun prop will work at slow engine speeds, but begins to slip as the engine speeds up. Then it will slip completely and the engine will rev faster.

You can check the prop by scribing or painting a line on the prop, from the center, across the rubber, onto the outside. Take the boat for a test run, make sure to accellerate hard, a few times. Then look at the line you created. If it is still a straight/continuous line, the prop is ok. If the line is broken, the prop hub is spun.

So, does the motor go into forward and move at all?
Does it sound like it is shifting?
Do you hear any cluncking or unusual noises from the motor?
Has any service been done recently, that required removing the lower unit?
Has the shift pivot screw (screw near the front bottom of the lower unit) been removed?

There is a shiftshaft that runs from the top of the motor, down into the lower unit. It may need adjusting to allow the forward gear to engage.
There also is the cable that runs from the controls, back to the engine. Check to see if they have come loose.

Re: No Forward!!!???

the nut on the top linkage has a loose nut. May this be the problem? It is just sitting back with threds on both sides.

It does not sound like it is shifting into forward. Reverse works fine. The engine is not making any odd noises, it just will only rev when throttle is pushed forward.

How do you adjust the top linkage? (The one that makes it shift) Tighten the nut?

What is going on?

The nut should be tight, and a second nut should be added, to keep the first nut tight.

A loose nut will allow it enough room to pop-out of gear, or not go into gear at all. To check a prop hub, paint a line from the prop nut outwards, to one of the blades, let dry, short shake-down, until it acts-up, check the line. If it no longer lines-up, the hub has spun.

Re: No Forward!!!???

I'm having a similar problem...launched the boat, got 100 yds. from shore, popped out of gear and wouldn't go back into forward. Reverse worked ok. Got it back home, put it in a test tank, now I have no forward or reverse. Just revs, prop doesn't turn and it doesn't make the charactaristic noise that it makes when it goes into gear. 1981 Chrysler 75 hp. How do you check the shaft for adjustment?
Thanks for any help.
