Got you. Yeah. I have a VVM too. Great things.
Did you see the bit about having to reset the ecu to configure starboard engine. Sometimes needs done by the sealer if there has been and Interruption
I seen that.. Called Merc last week, actually several times, and they felt as though it's damn near impossible to switch itself away from starboard as that's the factory default.

You’d think so. But has been known to happen, as far as I gather. Thought I’d mention it anyway.

So I sent my PCM out for repair and they found a bad Can-P circuit (or something along those lines) anyhow when I received the repaired unit and installed it, I still got the same problem. As if it wasn't touched. I brought the boat to the dealer and when they hooked it to their laptop, the laptop was not able to connect to the PCM.. Indicating no output. During my freshening up of the boat prior to the problem I swapped out cranking batteries and like an Idiot I put the cables on backwards and turned the key. I immediately seen what I'd done and rewired it correctly. Could this have done something we're missing? The motor starts and runs fine. I did loose my jackplate gauge and when testing it found that the pos & neg wires going to it were shorted out inside the unit itself. (Continuity between hot and neg leads). And popped 2nd fuse instantly

That little tidbit of information would have been helpful much earlier in the conversation ;)

With the polarity reversed, anything powered through a transformer is immediately suspect.

The majority of electrical components operate off 5 VDC or less, making most of the "electronics" on the boat susceptible to damage.

I assume they disconnected your 14 pin connector and connected directly to the motor?

If that is the case, you need to find out where/how that circuit is powered

Yes they connected under the termination resistor on the motor harness. Splits off from the 14 pin "main harness" The reason I left the battery deal out of the conversation is because part of me thinks this was well after I had the "lost motor com" error and it was during my hook and unhook 100 times troubleshooting. I'd switched batteries just to eliminate a battery with maybe a weak cell. Not 100% certain if it was before or after, but worth mentioning because it did happen and may have popped or fried a component we're missing.. Anything I should check? All 5 fuses are good.. 3 20amp, 1 5amp, & 1 3amp in two separate fuse holders on the engine itself

Hi. Bit more info there now…I suspect that you might now need a harness and/or you have a compromised cable or two. I’d check the main hot and earth post terminals on the engine. Check where the accessory multi plug wiring loom too. Meaning the loom that plugs into the engine and goes to sensors like paddle wheel, sea temp, trim position, fuel 1, fuel 2/other etc etc. you could have an issue anywhere on these. I’m going through similar myself because of a short circuit. Found damage all around the boat’s systems. Having to totally rewire the whole thing. You’ll need to do things like systematically test and prove the function and health of all the main components. Like stator, regulator, coils and leads etc.

So after a whole lot of hours and almost new everything I stumbled onto the problem. While deciding to simply swap the location of my speedometer (smartcraft) I unplugged it and removed it from the system entirely. Shortly thereafter and before reinstalling it I hooked my battery back up to check for power for an accessory. When I turned the key, to my absolute amazement the tach connected to the motor as did my vessel view module and my iPhone. Everything worked as it should. I then unhooked the battery and simply plugged the speedo back into its harness. Hooked everything back up and "lost motor com" displays on tach. no vessel view connected either. Unhook the speedo and it all works... Bottom line is my speedo must be shorted out inside the unit itself.. Who would have ever figured that? Thanks for all your help and I hope this thread helps someone else out in the future

See post #24, paragraph 3

Glad you found the issue

Suspected it may be something like this. Think I may have mentioned something similar. Anyway. Good find. Can I ask if you maybe tried the speedometer plugged into a different port on the junction box ?

Also. Make sure the Speedo harness from junction box to the gauge is connected the right way. It only works one way. Should be a label at each end saying junction box one end and gauge the other.
