"No-Call-List"...What a crock...!

Do they not have money for enforcement? Or have they disbanded the group - whoever it is - that is supposed to enforce this?

I'm still getting calls from some of the outfits I reported years ago. Now they somehow manage to get their caller I.D. 's to look like a cell phone from Minnesota or some such place.

What do they do to these people when they do stumble over - uh, sorry - catch them? My guess is a $100 fine, a slap on the a__, and an admonishment to go forth and sin no more.

I'd prefer they cut off their left hand for the first offense and...well you get it.

If a person signs up to avoid being disturbed by nuisance calls, is it logical to think that he/she will actually buy something from someone who makes such calls?

I'm a believer in free enterprise, but there is an underside. This is one of the ways that underside shows itself.

But back to the original thought - What the H_LL use is a no-call list if these "marketers" can ignore it so blatantly?

A couple of things . . .

Yes, the donotcall list is a joke. No real way of enforcing it.

Telemarketers do 'war dialing' so they do not need to know your number, etc. and obviously are not cross-referencing any DNCL. They just start with a beginning number in a known exchange and the computer calls all 9999 numbers in that exchange. For those who answer, they get connected to a telemarketer. They also do Caller ID spoofing, so they can put pretty much anything they want on the Caller ID.

You are not required by law to answer the phone. (unless it is the Admiral calling)

FWIW - if I choose to answer a call that I do not know the caller, I say 'hello' only once . . . often it takes the telemarketing computers a couple of seconds to sense the call and direct it to a rep. If my computer (aka brain) picks up on that I hang up. . . . Also, sometimes the computer does not act on the first 'hello', if you say 'hello' again, you are only helping the computer out.

Gotta go, the phone is ringing. :D

Ya calls from India can look like local cell phone calls. You have these temporary cells that can't be traced. I am getting more spam calls than ever. You have to answer them if your business depends on legit call ins

You know those phone calls you get with no one on the other end and a quick disconnection? That's most likely a war dialer at work. It flags your number indicating that a human answered that number. Then you get a call from a random person asking if you'd like to refinance your credit cards even though they have none of your information. I got one of those calls the other day when the wife and kids were gone......I ranted and raved like a psychotic preach at the pulpit and sang her a song with the most obscene lyrics you could imagine. Horrendous things I said to this scum of the earth, lowlife, exploiting-the-elderly woman. Things that'd make a mechanic blush. And she didn't hang up! At work we have to explain to a complainant at least 10 times a day about how this system works and that there's not a damned thing we can do about it.

Any company you do business with is exempt from the Do Not Call List unless you opt out. By defualt, most companies opt you in. Make sure that anytime, be it on-line or in person, make sure that you click or check the opt out box on the contract or checkout page. We use alias' lot on checkout pages on websites. Makes it easy to tell who sold your number to who when you get calls and mail for cubby (my wives horse)

FWIW: All 5 phones on Do Not call List. I can count the number of calls we've got from telemarketers in the past 6 months on one hand.

Can't remember getting more that 5 or 6 in the last 9 years.

What am I doing different? Don't know.

Exactly! Many of us have no choice but to answer an unknown number for business reasons.

It's galling that the phone companies charge us for the "star 69" service and then enable these goofs - for another upcharge - with the ability to defeat it. Double dipping? Certainly.

I don't care if they're calling from India or Mars. There's technology to defeat this stuff if phone service companies ever decide to do so. But that would reduce their call loading, wouldn't it? And the result would be reduced cash flow, right? So they'll never do it.

My frustration is with the enforcement efforts, which could force a solution if they ever became serious about it. When you do catch one of 'em, punish him/her to a degree that would get the attention of all the others.

I once had my answering machine say "HI. If this is a personal call please leave your name .If it is a business call HANG UP NOW" the wife made me remove it.... Companies are working hard to get peoples cell phone numbers. Once they do they will figure you are fair game for calls you dont want..
