You can certainly add (roll your own if you will) components that use NMEA 2K if'n you feel inclined to do so.............I have a few add on sensors like pressure, temp, flow rates, etc, etc on my 92 merc that all hook up to my Garmin's 2K port (via backbone [power and data bus]). The Garmin of course then reads and displays these sensor's data and a separate 12V powers these sensors via this backbone.

NMEA 2k is just a specific format/protocol (computer/digital communication data transport language) that is "proprietary" and a standardized set of comm rules and connects for the marine environment and meant to steal money from consumers by certain monopolies..........errrrr wait, that is basically a "can bus",(robust data bus) like in our cars that is used to interconnect the obd sensors and the like with the ECM (computer)
