I just bought an ns5b. at idle water seems to steam more than spurt. If I throttle it seems to spray out. On the shaft there is a Hole about an 2?. Is that hole supposed to be covered? And in the Hole I see shaft but it looks like a plate or flange just flopping around. What would that plate be?
Thank you joel

Re: Nissan ns5b water pump question

Everything sounds normal to me.
If you want to check and see if its getting hot just take the cover off and place your hand on the head. You should be able to hold your hand on it for 2-3 seconds or so. If its getting HOT you will know it. When outboards get hot the temp just seems to climb and climb.

That plate might be an inside cover for that hole. If it looks like its going to fall off inside the motor drop the lower unit and tighten it up.

THere is a rubber grommet that goes into the hole to seal it. I'm not sure what you see, but everyone else sees the coupler that holds the two shift rods together.

And if you leave the grommet out, exhaust will exit there. You do want the grommet.

If the pee tube is making steam at low RPM, you may want to install a new water pump kit (comes with impeller, bolts, gaskets, and wear items). That said, a bad base gasket can allow exhaust to pressurize the cooling system. You may be seeing either steam or exhuast. Neither is good.

Not saying that a new water pump isn't needed, ( It's good to put one in anyway just so you know what you have) but I found my Nissan 5, Tohatsu 5 and merc 5(same motors) all pruduced a fine spray and steam vs steady stream when run in a bucket. I suspected all of tehm needed pumps till i realized that they were sucking up a mix of water and exhaust vs clean water. Once put in the pond, i got a good consistant squirt out of all of them. If your running in a bucket, you might try muffs instead.

There are 2 tiny holes around rear upper leg, exhaust comes from them as engine in on while on bucket, it's normal as water almost seals fumes exiting from propeller at idle, buy a flush connector, works very well with engine on or off, forget all about the bucket.

Thank you for the info.. i final dropped the lower unit. The plate that I could see was ?stopper, drive shaft bushing?. I guess the last person never screwed the bushing drive shaft back. I am going to rebuild the pump. But, the water pipe has a chip on the bottom how far does the water pipe go into the pump case? It?s a bout a ? inch chip. Do you know the size and threads for the bushing drive shaft?

Parts are purchased by part number, not by size. Just contact your local Nissan/Tohatsu/Mercury dealer and they can help you.
