I have a Nissan ns40c don't know the year. It will not start without starting fluid. Is there anything I can do to fix this? Tried cleaning the carburetor. Any help is appreciated

Re: Nissan ns40c problems?

Year is unimportant, model/serial is everything. Is the choke working? Is fuel being delivered to the carb? Will it run OK after you start it? How did you clean the carb?

If the thrust rod is missing from the motor, you can get a new one from any dealer. The motor won't lock down without it.

The fuel is getting to the carb. After you get it cranked it will run fine. I just pulled it off took it apart and cleaned it with carb cleaner. I have nothing but the lever, on the reverse and trim lock. I am not very good with marine motors. Do you think the carb need adjusted?

I looked at the parts, i cant figure out what i need. Noone in my town will work on a Nissan. It looks like all i have is the lever you flip? I looked at the catalog just need to know what all to order? Also someone told me it looks like the reverse and trim would work off an old mercury or johnson?

Re: Nissan ns40c problems?

You can find a dealer at http://www.nissanmarine.com/search/index.html
Your nearest registered servicing dealer is James Company, 207 West Hildreth St., Enterprise AL 36330, 334-347-6514

In order to properly and completely clean the carb, it must be completely disassembled (including jets and emulsion tube nozzle), soaked for 4 hours in real carb dip, then blown out with generic carb cleaner spray, and finally reassembled, paying particular attention to the float height setting. If you did not do that, you merely make the carb shiny. The carb sprays are not aggressive enough to dissolve the varnish deposits that can accumulate in the tiny carb passages. You will also want to verify proper choke operation. Is the motor electric start? If so, does it have electric choke, which is supposed to be operated by pushing in on the RC box key switch? Are you choking to start from cold?

If you post a couple of pictures, we may be able to help you identify what parts are needed for the reverse lock on your motor.

Maybe they are closed for the season? Dunno.

When trying to cold start, are you choking it fully? Did the problem start recently, or has it been getting worse over time? You likely need to do a proper soak in real carb dip to get everything clean, but, since it does run after you do get it started, maybe the choke is not closing fully when you are trying to start it.

As for the reverse lock, without seeing it, it's hard to know what may be missing or broken. If you can post a couple of pictures, we can probably help.
