Shifter problem

My son has a Teleflex CH1700 shifter. The neutral throttle warm up button will not pop back out and he cannot get the engine out of neutral. Does anyone know what to do to fix this problem. The shifter is only a couple of years old and used very lightly.

Engine is 140 HP Mercruiser about 15 years old. Side shifter was replaced about 2 - 3 years ago. Has been working fine for the handful of times he has been out. Last week he started it up and pushed in the fast idle/neutral button and it would not come back out when he tried to shift into gear.
