Re: Nissan 5hp Starting Issues

Started, yeehaaaaa!!!! Much better spark with the new exciter coil. The motor still runs rough from 1/2 to full throttle, so I will soak it once again in carb cleaner or else replace it. Thanks to all for the advice.

How accurately do you need to set the float level? I have adjusted it slightly higher than level, as it was flooding. I did notice that when I had disconnected the fuel line, to run it dry, the engine began to run much smoother just before it died. Any ideas as to why this might be?

You will typically find that all outboards speed up just before gasping their last breath when running out of fuel. Typical. Has to do with the last few drops of gas and atomization in the carb area.

On the 4/5/6, we set the float dead level when inverted. If the carb is overflowing with gas, you probably need(ed) a new needle, as the seat is a pressed-in, non-replaceable item. Just fixed one of those yesterday. And I did set the float to be exactly level. Runs like new.
