Re: next spring when ALL the boaters come out.....

I saw one while loading my boat up, an old man was parked in the dumbest spot, right in the traffic lane of most people using the dock, I mentioned something to him, he blows me off.

not more than 2 min later I see a big ol ski boat backing up and not paying attention, he had no more than 2 inches before he took out the little boat, the old man looked like this

Funny note: His son took my advice all personal, flashed a bow at us later... I still have no idea why... we laughed at him, they drove off

I won't lie... I pack...

I don't bother trying to help any more, I just try and stay out of the way. :)

i will admit watching the guys struggle is funny but their comes a point when boat ramp etiquette should come into play and as a boater i have patience cuz im out their to relax but people have got to learn to swallow their pride and know when to ask for help ive asked for it and people were welcome to help me cuz i was frustrated and not thinking clearly and the wife was getting mad at me for taking so long

another thing that angers me and is children swimming at the boat ramp with a no swimming sign posted and the parents sitting about 100' away i yell at the kids and my wife yells at me and then the parents tell me to relax until i mention that i cannot see a child underwater and if i pull in with my boat that kid is fish bait and if i back my boat in on trailer i drown their kid

My favorite are the ones who don't ask and just start trying to help, usually screwing up a well polished system you have perfected over the years. At that point I have NO problem throwing etiquette out the window and yelling "hands off!"

Re: next spring when ALL the boaters come out.....

lol yeah ^

I have gotten quite good at launching and retrieving the boat by my self and staying dry while doing so, but people always think the lone guy needs help, usually messing me up.

While I appreciate the gesture, I try to not get to angry with them...

Last time around was during a storm, and as I mentioned above... my shirt blew up (almost over my head lol) showing my gear.
2x of that and I just tucked the shirt in with my bat belt in full view.
The "Helper" finally then backed off, and just watched me with a funny look on his face

I did appreciate the gesture, honestly I took on a bunch of water, I got cut off pulling into the bay and had to kick it in reverse, a wave went right over my splashwell, I thought I was sunk there for a few minutes.

If somebody offers to help I genuinely appreciate the offer and always respond positively with a smile:D. I'm talking about the few that don't ask and just start grabbing at lines and or railings...

yeah,

that's what most do, they will just jump in and start grabbing things, usually making what was not an issue into an issue.
even had one guy that started pointing out everything he saw wrong with my boat while I was fighting the wind... very helpful...

Help is great, usually if they are smart they will just hook the front of the boat to the winch and crank it, now that's helpful!

Re: next spring when ALL the boaters come out.....

First idiot of the season was the guy who left his sailboat tied up to the dock while he went to the store! He could have tied off at the end of the dock (instead of in the prime spot!!!) and not been such a jerk. He could have tied up tighter, but instead left 8' of slack in his line which made launching even harder as it drifted around. I should have taken a photo of his stern dock line, it was easily 50' and he wrapped it around the mooring till the ears barely stuck out leaving the excess tag floating in the water. Someone untied him and his boat drifted into the trees on the bank while we were out.

And, no, it absolutely was not me.

I hate it when my helpers wrap 20' of line onto one cleat. Doen right it requires one wrap on each "ear." it's the same knot as a clove hitch or two half hitches. Anything after that adds nothing to the security. It's especially a pain when you have more than one boat using the same cleat.

Hard to get good help these days

move as far back as possible and remember it's a launch, not a dock or someone will move you.

I did feel bad for him when we came back in and found out someone set his boat adrift, but it was way too shallow for me to even think about helping.

I don't think setting someone's boat adrift is a good idea, for many reasons, but I sure understand how tempting it would be.

Re: next spring when ALL the boaters come out.....

I'm bumping this past the 90 days because it's already on an obvious roll so no reason to start a new one...

Yea he was wrong, but the person who unsecured his boat was more wrong. In fact had I been there to see it I would honestly step in, even go to blows, with the guy attempting to release it. I was raised on the water and my grandfather and my dad always said "Help everyone who needs it, even those who don't deserve it.". I think that qualifies. I'm the type that will ruin my entire days plans to help someone that really needs it.

I have a story from the other week. I tow my 12FT Aluminum V Hull with my wifes Chevy HHR AWD because I'm disabled and we can't afford for me to have a truck. The car does great for this boat and I'm a very smart driver who never forgets what he's driving. So after a day of fishing we cruise in, i leave the boat with my wife and I go get my trailer. As I'm leaving the dock a guy who had just loaded his bass boat (only other guy there) says "Is that your HHR? Cuz I aint pulling you out of the lake.". I was annoyed with the condescending attitude and lack of actual concern but I simply said "Thanks but I'll be fine".

I loaded up my boat and as I'm securing it he goes to take off up the hill from the ramp that goes back around to the exit and as he stomps the gas his boat rolls off the trailer and smashes down on the ramp, the crack of fiberglass was probably heard two counties over. I felt so bad but still had to choke back a smile. So being the way I am I walked over and was about to offer to help and he starts cursing at me to get the F away from him and it's my fault because he's so busy watching what I'm doing etc etc.

I just put my hands up and walked off and left. Two days ago I get a call from a good friend he says I need your help with something can you stop by later, so I did. My buddy apparently has another buddy and mentioned to that guy hey, I know a younger guy but he's great with fiberglass and he can tell you what you can do etc etc. You guessed it, the buddy he had me coming to see? Boat ramp guy!

I waited to see if he would apologize and he didn't, he goes "This F'n GUY!". I said to my friend sorry man, can't help. Then I looked at boat ramp guy and said is that your boat? 'Cuz I aint bailing you out. I left.

Excuse me. Sir, I will have you know I have never once forgotten the plug.............................. on my party barge!:p

My brother and I joke about that every time we launch my pontoon because we have both done it on previous boats we each owned.

You should see the looks when I stop him right before the boat hits the water and I ask "did you put the plug in"
