Re: Next In Our How-To Series- - - Hip Replacement

i really don't mind looking at surgery anymore, a big accomplishment from my younger days i might add.... but i can't tell heads nor tails of what the heLL we're looking at, in those pics

well ok, whatever it is, i see skin pulled back, and metal objects in there, and its basically gross. but if you put descriptions by every pic, it would help.

my poor grannyNlaw had all that done 5yrs ago, at 82yrs of young age. now she has to wear a special shoe with the 2"lift. fits right in with latest styles, except for the other flat soled shoe :D

Yeah, ebb's right. Some description is required.
Upper-left is the old ball. The white part is the worn-out part.
Lower-left is prep. for ball and socket insertion.
Upper-right the ball & socket in place.
Lower-right is a little finger alignment.

I believe I could do this.

c/6

Hooty

Homerr and all concerned.
It was a walk in the park. Painless. I'd do it again tomorrow if it wasn't for the recoup time.
It'll be 2 mos. the 13th of this month since I had it done and I transitioned to a cane today.

c/6

Hooty

Re: Next In Our How-To Series- - - Hip Replacement

I see it everyday Hooty..#1 pic is fragments of the removed femoral head, #2(right)is a trial fit of the cup(acetabulum) , #3 the new stem, it is cemented into the femur, #4 is the new artificial femoral head fixing to be placed into the cup. Ebb..The surgeons strive to keep the legs the same lenght but at times that is impossible. My job is to image the process using a device called a C-arm. What lead you to post these pics Hooty? Is it yours?

No zerk fittings. The ball and socket are harder than Chinese algebra so they don't require a lot of lube. Just an occasional shot of Cuervo gold.

c/6

Hooty

thanx for the info dmessy. it seems to be none other than "c-6" himself! i guess he's on his initial stages to being the terminator... ;)

so why is it that matching the length is not possible in some cases? is it that you can't glue down the bone but a certain amt? maybe avoiding the section with bone marrow? i'm just guessing here.

senyor hooty - i will pray on your hip's behalf :D

Ebb- lots of reasons, extent of deterioration of bone, deformaties, previous surgeries, body habitus, etc. They just do the best they(surgeons) can with what they got to work with. Old bone is not very forgiving, kinda like seaworn aluminum....

Yeah, OB, cup is cemented and usually screwed into place and stem is literally driven (press fit) into the femur that was previously filled with cement. They got about 2 minutes working time then the stem is permanent. Real hassle when the patient goes out and rebreaks thier leg and the process has to be redone. That old cement has to be chisled out

Wow.Makes it easy to understand that the surgeons have to perform some precision drilling and fit work.
Better go easy on the machine Hooty.Doesn't sound like something you'd want to have done over.
Oh and stay clear of Delta Airlines or you'll get red tagged for sure. :)

Re: Next In Our How-To Series- - - Hip Replacement

good info dmessy. i was just curious- it is because the stems only come in 1 length? is it due to a manuf limitation? or could longer stems be used to adjst the length of the leg?

its late- ck back tamale ;)

Re: Next In Our How-To Series- - - Hip Replacement

They're working on a robot that drills (machines) the inside of the femor to match the stem.
They didn't use cement for the stem in my femor. They wrapped the femor with s/s wire, to keep it from splitting, and used a swinging press to fit the stem. I saw the xrays again today and it's a nice, snug interference fit.

c/6

Hooty
