Newbie Running Transducer Cable

This is my first post and I am a new first time boat owner. I have a 2000 Tracker Pro 175 and I recently accidently cut the transducer cable down next to the transducer (don't ask). Anyway I am really not very handy (evidence my accidental cutting of the cable) but I did buy a new transducer with cable for the Humminbird depth finder. The old cable and transducer is still attached to the boat. The cable appears to run up the right side of the gunnel. The boat shop wants two hours labor at $110 an hour. Has anyone ever done this before that could advise an idiot on it?

Thanks

Re: Newbie Running Transducer Cable

hey! welcome to the forums! this is an awesome place you will find out and we all will walk ya through anything. whatever degree of mechanical ability ya have. everybody was new once and i've called my self an idiot (and worse!) on more than one occasion. :) is your transducer mounted on the transom? ya have to find where the wire enters the boat. fish the new wire through the same hole and re-route it back the same path as the old wire to your depth finder. if the wire is hidden in the gunnel, tie a string to the end by the depth finder before you pull the old wire out. this way you can tie the new wire to it and pull it back. use some marine silicone to back fill the hole for the wire and coat any screws ya put back in to mount the new transducer. these are some pics of my dirty soon to be cleaned and painted transom.

Here are some pics (I hope). I think I get what you are saying but I assume I will need to remove the actual head unit to get to wherever the plug from the cable plugs into it. I will try fishing it like you suggested and see how to goes. First pic is where the cable goes into the gunnel, second and third are the transom mount and cut cable.

got a pic of the unit and how its mounted? ya have to disconnect there first. once your disconnected there, tie your string to the end of the cable. ya then have to snake the old cable out backwards all the way to the transducer. you may have to cut some wire ties along the way. examine the way the cable runs. you might just be able to tape the new cable to the cut end of the old cable and snake it to the unit like that.

Gotta say, that is one of the best worded question / seeking advice post this idiot has ever read. Wish I could help but you don't need advice from another admitted idiot. Good luck my friend!

Re: Newbie Running Transducer Cable

Thanks for the kind words. I took the head unit off and it has two wires twisted together and hard wired into the bottom of the unit. I was hoping it would be a plug matching the one on the transducer cable but no such luck. I assume there are two cables because one is for the transducer and the other for power?

I then tried to find where the two twisted together cables led to but they appear to go into a massive bunch of wires and cables. Would you guess that there is a plug somewhere in there that matches the one on the end of the new transducer and cable I bought?

Here I was worried that fishing the cable through would be my biggest problem (of course it still might be). Unless I can find where this thing plugs in to I am not going to mess with fishing the cable since it won't matter. I will just have to pay the price for my stupid mistake. Which appears to be about $110 an hour.
