Been working on an 87 sunrunner with mercury stern drive. The fluid for the trim motor is low, but I don't know what it is. Can I use power steering fluid?

Re: What fluid do I use in my alpha 1 trim pump?

Don't mix the oils... Use ATF ONLY if it already has ATF in it.. If it has 30W oil and you still want to use ATF, then you need to flush out all of the the 30W oil....

BTW... Quicksilver trim and tilt fluid is...... 30W oil...

Chris.......
Copying from Chris' response elsewhere. 30W oil will work, or you can use ATF. Just don't mix the two. You want to match what is currently in there. If you don't know, you may need to flush it.

Welcome aboard.

Is it red?, if so ATF (not dexron or type F, just plain ATF)

Is it brown?, if so, SAE 30

Pink (usually) = ATF + H2O

ie, flush and flush, and flush... Then find out WHERE the water is getting in.

it is possible that it turned pinkish from being to low. It will foam up if it is to low. Top it off, let it sit and check it in the morning. If it's still low, from the air settling out top it off again. it may still have some air pockets in the rams from the air, so keep an eye on it. if it keeps foaming up in a couple days it has water in it.
