Newbie question. When should I consider bottom painting?

Hello Everyone,

We bought a 2004 hurricane sd217 in Sept. and had in at a marina through Oct. of last year (or for about 5 weeks). Prior to that the boat had always be trailered.

This season the boat will be at a marina all season which is on the great lakes. Generally, when should I have it bottom painted and how often.

Thanks,
Paul Bolden

Ayuh,... I'm over here on Lake Ontario, 'n I don't use bottom paint at All...

I don't have a fur problem with my boat, but a couple of Bud's do clean their hulls once or twice a season....
No bottom paint, just a scrub down...

Hello Bond-o,

Are you trailering your boat or do you seasonally dock her?

Thanks,

Is it bottom painted allready..or are you asking IF you should paint it..

No, the boat hasn't been painted. It's been trailered so no need for bottom painting. The boat will now be seasonally dock at a marina hence the concern.

Thanks,

It all depends on the water conditions in your particular marina..

Is it a High Growth rate for zebras..or other micro little buggers that like gelled bottoms ?

I would suggest asking your New dock members how much growth is in the water..that will answer your question..

I dont know the water that bond-o has..but it Must be cleaner than here locally or he would Not be able to sit for a season without some serious growth ;) .

We leave our boat in lake erie all season, you just have to pull it out a couple times and give it a good pressure wash. I would not bottom paint, it is ugly and it scrubs speed. A good oat of wax can go a long way to helping keep the bottom clean.

Ayuh,... It ain't so much Cleaner,...
'ell, I'm downstream from You...

I'm finding it has Alot more to do with Sunlight, than the water's cleanliness...

My barge sees a few zebra mussels, 'n abit of green Fur on the drive, 'n trim tabs,...
But she lives nosed in-between my 2 riverhouses...
A quick run in the pond usually cleans it all up nicely,...
What don't come off, don't matter,...
It all dries up, 'n blows off durin' the off-season...

The Housebarge moored out 20' off the dock, grows abit of a green blanket on it's starboardside, as it faces South/ Southwest...
The portside bootstripe/ waterline I painted on a couple years ago, with Rustoleum industrial enamel looks darn near as Great today, as it did the day after I brushed it on....

Good point..

Mebbe you should just stick it in for a season and find out before you BP it.

I agree that you would need to use the boat and not just let it sit there.

What about blistering though ?
