hey guys, been a while since I've posted anything.. just thought i would show you the new winter project i just picked up. The boat that i fixed up last winter (thanks to the help i got on here) turned out to be just a little too small for our liking (only 14 feet) so i looked on kijiji for a few weeks and my girlfriend and i decided on this boat. Its a 17 foot 1972 grew with a 1972 johnson 125 hp outboard. It came with a nice 2007 trailer thats in great shape too.. and still small enough to fit in my garage :)

I only paid $500 for everything so i new that there was going to need to be restored. After having a good look when i got home.. the floor wasnt as bad as i thought.. but still needs to be replaced along with the stringers. Luckily the transom still looked great when i drilled into it.. so thats a bonus.

anyways, just thought i would see if anyone had info on the boat or motor... im curious on what model this boat would be.. and just want to know if there are any problems associated with the boat/motor.

the serial number on the motor is ESL72R.

any info or suggestions would greatly be appreciated as always and thanks for reading.

and sorry if the pics are bad. I havent taken any of my own yet. these ones were from the ad that i copied onto my comp.

Hi d, she looks pretty good for the price you paid. It should go like stink with that 125 hp. What's the maximum rating on the nameplate?

On the motor there should be a hp designation before the ESL. This will tell you if you really have a 125 or not(could be a 100hp). My suspicions arise from the the cover and LU being from a different motor. From what I know the Johnsons of 72' should have a completely green leg with white cover and Evinrudes were white top to bottom. The ES is electric start, L is long shaft, 72 the year, no idea what the R is.
The lower unit is the electric shift that works fine until they get water in them. So you need to really watch your fluid as once they go south they are costly to rebuild. You can get most of the parts except for the pump and one of the bearings which are no longer available. The other problems with these is that they use distributor type ignition utilizing a power pack that is expensive ($2-300) if it dies. If you do a search in the Johnson/Evinrude section there have been some that have converted them to run using automotive CDI packs with success.

Both of the above make the 73' and newer motors more desirable but if it runs and shifts they are good motors.

Re: New winter Project

thanks for the reply guys. Luckily for me the guy i bought the boat off of put a new power pack on it last month. It seems to run pretty good but could probably use a good tune up. The real test will be when i get it on the water and see how she performs.. hopefully it doesnt have too many issues.

I was only going off the number that were on the paper work from when he registered the boat in his name.. I'll have a look and see the number on the motor and find out what she actually is.. is it just me or does 125hp seem a little much for it? i know my 14 footer with a 1962 40hp johnson seems be fast enough for my liking.. i can imagine this thing would be pretty quick with a 125.. well if that motor even is a 125 lol

This might sound like quite a newb question.. but where exactly would the capacity or the name plate be on this boat? I basically go the boat, checked out the floor and transom and then pushed her intop my garage until the weekend. The last boat i fixed up was 1966 14 foot fiberglass boat and the plate was on the back near the motor on the left hand side.

I am going to have a look for it when i get home.. is that the normal spot it would be in? and what if it doesnt have a plate on it? am i a little screwed? lol

anyways thanks for the help.. its always appreciated.

I don't know about back then but the CG/rating plate is suppose to be in view of the operator. On my AC the plate is MIA also but is the same size boat and according to the literature I've found on it it's rated for 120 so you should be alright. If all else fails you can work the formula.

With a running motor I'd say you got a good score on your project. :D I would check the LU oil for water. Take note that these electric shift LU's take type c lube.
