Iam going to put a new water pump in my 82, 50hp Johnson, I have a Selco Manual. My Motor has
a shift rod. In the book on page 8-173 Lower unit
service, it say to remover the starter motor, I don't see what the starter moter has to do with taking the lower unit out? Also I took out the oil screw out of the lower unit, and about three onces of water came out. I am new at this. Do you think that I can do this job? Thanks for any help. Conrad

Conrad, welcome to iboats. You may have to take the starter motor out to get to the pin or screw holding the shift rod, before attemting to remove the lower unit. When you say water came out of the lower unit was this after just running it on muffs or has it been sitting, and also did any gear lube come out? Either way water is not supposed to be in there, you may just need to plastic gaskets around the vent and drain screws.
