Hello,

I am a new user to this forum and I would like to ask a question about the yamaha 250 OX66 EFI engine.

I am about ready to buy a used 23' Proline walk-around. It has a single 2001 250 OX66 EFI engine and has 160 hrs on it. I plan on using the boat as a charter fishing boat on the missouri river in SD for walleye and salmon. I have never owned a yamaha engine. I will install a kicker motor (9.9 or 15hp or ? ) for trolling.

1. Is this engine a good choice for this boat and this use?

2. How many hrs do you think I will be able to put on the engine before it will need to be rebuilt/replaced?

3. What type of maintenance will I be in for and can I do the maintenance myself?

4. What if any "spare parts" or tools should I have on hand to keep the boat running for a full summer fishing schedule?

5. What would be your recommendations for the kicker motor and how would setup/mount the kicker? I will need helm control for the kicker motor?

I would welcome any advice some of you with more experience have to offer.

Thanks

Re: new user, 250 OX66 EFI question

motor is already old.
has it seen salt water?
do a FULL cooling system and fuel system maint.
this ncludes water pump, thermostats, pressure control valve.
pay attention to the driveshaft seals when doing the pump.
the cooling system inspect ALL fuel lines, this means dissconecting them and cutting a bit off and internally inspect them.
replace all hull and boat filters, this also includes the VST and injector screens.
clean and PROPERLY test the O2 sensor output voltage.
once all this is done,if you keep clean fresh gas, you can back off and do it again every 200 hours or yearly whichever occurs first.
the engine oil tank MUST be tested yearly or every 200 hours, its also the same for remote oil tank filter inspection/replacement.

Re: new user, 250 OX66 EFI question

Thanks for the reply,

Old as in too many hours, or old as in too many years?

Owner tells me the motor was freshwater only, I can't see any corrosion or saltwater deposits on the outside of the engine anywhere. If it had been run in saltwater what should I be looking for and concerned about?

I will perform all the maintenance you listed before I put the boat in service. I guess the first step will be to get the service manuals, test equipment, and any special tools required.

Once all of this is done do you think the engine will be reliable? Will repair parts be available if something breaks or wears out? Any spare parts I should keep on hand for this engine? The boat will be in charter service and I can't afford any "broke down" days if at all possible.

Also this engine is not the one that came from the factory for this boat. Any concerns there?

Would I be better off with an i/o model?

Thanks again.

Re: new user, 250 OX66 EFI question

typically 10 year old motors with low hours, like the one your describing, die a violent death due to lack of PROPER maint.
doesnt have may hours so it gets neglected
kinda why you see them thar nascar bubbas racing with last years tires and gas.
only ran one lap so it must still be good.
this 250 is very reliable and a very high performance engine that MUST be properly maintained or it dies.
there are two types of maint, corrective and preventative.
its your choice.
preventative maint is expensive.
corrective maint is VERY expensive.

I love the way you have with words.

Truer words were never spoken when it comes to maintenance.

I try.
at least the moderators havent busted me latly :).
but the price of a water pump kit remains the same whether or not you buy a piston with it.
