I am in the process of purchasing a completely rebuilt johnson engine. It is a 90HP. My current engine was scraped after it complete kicked the bucket. The previous engine was a sixty horsepower. My boat is coast guard rated to 115 Hp but i wanted to know if i should build some kind of exterior support from 2X4's and fiberglass and then bolt it in. Is that overkill or is that a good idea.

Re: New Transom

I'd be more concerned that your transom is in good nick with no rot.. if its fine, then you will be also..

I have a 100hp on my boat and it was underpowered with a 40hp when I got it.. last weekend I hit nearly every rock in our river (long story) and the prop and skeg had my rather large 100hp bouncing the back of the boat up and down like a yoyo, and the transom didn't even flex..

If your boats rated for it.. and the transom is in good condition, then bolt that new puppy on there and spend your time fishing...

rgds

Franki

You should be okay, a 90 isn't going to be a massive weight increase over a sixty. Good luck...
