Re: fiberglass warped on transom

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

getting ready to encase transom with glass, one problem, i might have to much of a space on staboard side of transom and side . every where else looks good at least to me. posted some pics. space is about 3/4" maybe 7/8 " .this is mostly at top half of transom. how do i seal the edge of my drive cut outs ,assuming doing the cutting out after transom is installed.

Hi 1250..

I would use some fiberglass putty ( cabosil, resin and chopped mat mix ) for your gaps.

Its gonna get hot..so dont start your trans glass untill its cooled of and reprepped.

Your drive cut outs .. epoxy coat them well.

Some try to dig/grind a small gap in the wood and fill with pb.

Yeah, pretty much what YD said, but in my experience, the more the resin is thickened, the slower and cooler it cures. So I would not be worried about high temps.

Just make the resin thick and include some glass and you are good to go.

Another option is buying one of the pre-mixed chopped strand fillers available on the market. Check out the local auto parts store and look for products like "kitty hair" or "tiger hair" etc. They are poly resin with thickeners and chopped mat all pre mixed. Makes a good filler for big gaps.

Re: new transom install ?

is there a standard amount of pb to mix for bedding transom per ft., also can i use what squishes out to filete inside hull.my transom is 7' long . i was figuring half gal of resin, plus fillers for bedding and sides to fill gap . does this sound about right

Re: new transom install ?

Are you planning on mixing it all up at once? It might be less wasteful to mix up 2 or 3 cups and see how far it goes. You don't have to do it all at once.

To your question: I don't know how to figure out the amount to use per foot. It depends on the size of the gaps, the size of the fillet you make, etc.

Re: new transom install ?

I would Implore that you DO NOT use the out of the can stuff for your trans bond ! You wont have time with it ( Im assuming the cream hardend stuff ).

And.. Please dont fill those gaps and start to lam over them without letting it cool down ( the mass of the putty Will get hot if kicked incorrectly ).

Make up 3/4 gallon of cabosil/resin/chopped mat ( at the mat after the cabosil and resin mix and dont use a power mixer after the mat has been added ) Into a gallon container. .. depending on how much gap as stated is what your going to need.

Yes let the putty goosh out and finger it tight down in the gap as possible. then hotcoat some more filler in the gap ( your fillet ). let cure.. go have a beer.

Come back the next day and 40 grit scuff/de-nubb anything and lam.

Remeber for that last over the trans lam have Everything together before you start :)

Cream hardener .. like for bondo.. they offer tiger hair with cream hardener ( 3m and such ).

I dont know what the saw dust is for.

I dont know how much your stranded fiber looks like so I cant tell.

Re: new transom install ?

yd i have a gallon bag of the csm i destranded , took pic of it not very good quality due to flash . However the strands are about 1 1/2" long will this work for pb. Saw dust was going to use as more filler mix incase i ran low on cabosil , for fellets.

Re: new transom install ?

I personally like my chopped mat about 1/2"ish. Anything more is going to be a pain to mix and spread out.

Your going to be mixing approx 1 to 1 cabosil and resin by Volume :)

So a qt of resin and a qt of fluffy cabosil is going to yield about 1.25 qts of putty.

Never heard of the term PB before Iboats..guess thats the basic consistancy your wanting to acheive. you can make a thicker or thinner putty depending on your usage.

Oh..btw..I suggest if your using poly with MEKP, USE your safty glasses while mixing. You can catch a pocket of MEKP and squirt that on your or anyone else near you.

Re: new transom install ?

I made my PB pretty much as Doc suggested here. I considered wood flour or talc as a thickening agent, but decided against it. Not sure what you mean by "de-stranding", or rather how you did it. I just cut the CSM up into small strips. The resin will break down the binding agent in the mat. My ratio is pretty much 1:1:1, 1 part resin, 1 part Aerosil and 1 part chopped CSM. I measure the resin first, so I know exactly how much to catalyze later, mix the Aerosil in with a mixer, and then stir in the CSM. I agree with YD about not using an electric mixer after the mat is added, it just gets tangled around the blade. I like to make 16oz batches. If I am doing a lot of PBing, I will make up several un-catalyzed batches and then cat them when needed. When I catalyze, I will stir the mix with a paint mixing stick as best I can, then pour the mixture into another pot (I use plastic automotive mixing cups I get from my composite supplier) and continue mixing, making sure the cat gets spread out.
I learned from another poster here that a plastic spoon works well to make nice smooth corners.
Something else I tried, I used some strands of rovin in the gaps, then PBed over them. My thought is that it would act like rebar. I don't know about the 'correctness' of this, but it's just something I tried.

Re: new transom install ?

When I said mix 3/4 gal of putty..I didnt mean that you use All of it on your trans :) just have it ready ( I dont know how level your trans glass is..and your going to need the rest for fillet ... might need more or less in the long run but its a pain to mix up diy hair putty :) )

Your not going to be able to use a Notched trowel with hair putty.. you will pull that stuff all over the place.

Might be a good idea how to mix and spread before you start kickin off big batches for your trans.

I dont even know how you plan on install of the trans. screw or clamp method..

Kinda hard to tell at this point.

Oh..take a razor and cut the glass out of the drives b4 install :) .

Re: new transom install ?

Cool cool...btw I like mine more like Mayo than PB before I add the glass :) .

Another trick about mixing your cabosil/resin putty is if your going to add chopped/scissored up mat in there.. you dont have to get all the chunks out before mixing your glass. The glass will break those apart in a hurry.

If your just making cabosil putty then you should get it creamy with no chunks ( Ive modded a coat hanger for a custom sized mixer on a coardless drill many times :) ).

A 50c thrift store flour sifter works very nicely to break the chunked cabosil for your mix ( I like to add the resin to the cabosil not cab to resin ).

Re: new transom install ?

finaly got time to completely glass in transom and stringer peices also. used 1708 on both transom and stringers . will be going over stringers again with 1808 since i ran out of 1708. everything went rather smoothly had a couple of bubbles becuase of the curves in the hull and was tabbing with one peice on last layup . prior to two oter tabs of 6 and 8" . now time to tackle motor mount , will cut skin part out later and grind area for new one . here are more pics if it interest you. that circle light spot on side of stinger was my exploritory hole to see how my stringers were . found out i had no worry hollow stringers thank God.
