Hello all....replacing the transom on my "new" 1982 17' Lowe flat bottom. I've got my marine ply and epoxy ordereded up. Just asking for some opinions on the 1/4" bolt holes on the top and bottom of the transom. The transom is 11" tall overall. There are about 5 holes top and bottom. I'm thinking about just notching out the holes so they can be properly sealed with epoxy instead of trying to get epoxy to fill the 1/4" thu holes. I don't think it would weaken the structure and would be better off in the long run since it would get sealed better (this is my first transom job...) Thanks in advance...

Re: New Transom Advice

I would guess that it would be better to pre drill them a little bigger than needed and fill with PB when glassing. Then drill the correct size when everything is cured, leaving a good seal for the transom wood.

As I said, this my interpretation of what I have read, please don't take it for gospel. Maybe someone who knows will confirm this for you.

I think you would be better off drilling the holes slightly oversized after the dry fit. Let the epoxy run in the holes and seal them. Drill them back out for your bolts, smaller bit. Seal with 3M 5200 or 4200 as you reinstall the bolts.

IMO notching the wood would provide less structure to the edges of the transom.

Re: New Transom Advice

Thanks. I think drilling out the oversized epoxy holes makes sense. I've got a tube of 5200 ordered, too. Hopefully everything goes as planned...
