Got a small update. As you may have seen in the merc section, I’ve had it in the water and running. Ran it about 2 hours. Some handling issues to rectify. Runs well but slips in reverse and wiring on motor is looking tough. Concerned water might be in gear case after test. Taking it in for a full look over by a mechanic. I hope that between he and I, we can make it reliable for the season

Its now better situated on my trailer after I gutted the PO’s roller setup and installed new 8” tapered rollers. Other tweaks and it’s much more stable as it sits. The side roller guides are going on next.

As for the Hull, I assume there is leakage though I can’t determine how much. It needs floors and a transom. Floors will wait. For now I did a temporary overlay of OSB which only helped a little. Not a great call in hindsight. It only needs to last until fall and will only see chance rain so hope it lasts the duration.

Its getting a new transom in a week or two. It’s toast. I pulled the sleeper seats and they are tough. Bases will be repaired just enough to make it through the season. New replacement seats will go in next year, followed by a handful of low profile seat bases. I’m planning on placing a pair of these under the sleeper seats so I can pull the sleepers and go on pro fishing outings with 2-4 swivels. Planning on a drop-in front casting deck also.

after seeing several projects slip away from me unfinished, I’m trying to keep this one in manageable chunks and doing the major upgrades off season. Aside from the work to get into its first service.

Another update. Lower unit was toast but luckily my mechanic had a good used one. He tuned the carbs, put in a new water pump, and put on a good used prop. The seller had the wrong prop on it...there’s a surprise.
Going to try it out this afternoon...wish me luck

also, I have my transom blank made up. I’m ready to do the swap, but I need the drain tubes before I do anything more. what are these called and where do I buy them and the flanging tool?

That's terrible corrosion, I have to wonder what the water it was sitting in was, as it looks like it follows the waterline.
I may have a different perspective being from MN where SS16's are a dime a dozen, but I'd not spend much time on it.

Some of us have gone to using the nylon or plastic drain tubes through our transom to avoid the flaring process. Sealed up with 5200 they won't come apart and or leak.

I used the black ones in my SS.

Hey, would you mind posting that link for the DIY flaring tool again? It’s not coming up or at least not on my phone. Thanks I’ve got aluminum fittings ordered

Someone else on here posted a way to flare the drain tubes with a ball peen hammer. I ended up using that method with mine, it was pretty simple and looks fine, especially after paint you can't tell the difference.
I clamped a piece of wood over the inside on the drain tube then used 2 hammers, a ballpeen end in the drain tube and another to tap it into the tube to start forming the flare. Once it was flared enough I just kept tapping around the flared edge outward until I could flatten it out.
Don't forget to coat the inside of the hole with 5200.

Thanks Rob, I was just wondering how I was going to do it with the splashwell in place. I don’t know if I can do the DIY bolt flanger method with it in place.

BTW, you did a phenomenal job on your SS!!

Thanks Shoestring. I'm sure the DIY bolt would work but the ball peen hammer method was easy and didn't require going to the store to purchase anymore parts.
I hope all works out well with your hull. I'll follow along to see how your teardown goes this winter.

Thanks. I haven’t disassembled anything yet so I’m only surmising the DIY bolt won’t work as the flanges on my drains dip down below the splashwell pan. Perhaps once it is free of fastenings to the transom, there might be enough flex. I’d like to get the transom changed before winter.

On the transoms where the SW is not full coverage (like on a V5) you put the drain tubes in before the SW.

Hi I'm new here. I just bought an older starcraft 16" aluminum and am wondering if anyone would be able to tell me the year of it?
