I just purchased a '79 15' Ashcraft center console, cathedral hull that has been completely restored to like new. I bought it from a friend who has been into boats all his life, and the thing looks like it was just built last year. Anyhow, my question:

I am considering putting a strong rebuilt Chrysler 70hp OB on the boat, and it is manual trim/tilt. I want to convert to a power trim, and I want to know what options are available. Am I going to have to buy one of the power brackets that attach to the stern ($500+?!) or is there a cheaper, but still reliable option?

Thanks in advance!

------------------
Netsloth

15' Ashcraft Center Console

Re: New to me

Try boat salvage yards, net. And keep in mind that midsize Force-Merc will fit like it was made for it.
Somebody, somewhere has the entire setup in his back yard,I'll bet.
Good luck, and happy bargain hunting.

BEWARE, BEWARE
Chrysler outboards (became Force) are NOTORIOUS pieces of JUNK and I am severly understating the case. Hey,I would not want to see Ayatollah Kohmeini or Saddam Hussein have a boat with a Chrysler. Better to just go out and run over your foot with your car if you want pain! I hope you have a great boating season, Bill

Re: New to me

I dissagree with Bill. 2000+2001 OMC is not exactly the engine to have on a boat either.
With all the recalls, you would never see real WATER.
I guess opinoins are like...Well you get the picture.
Chysler is tried and true. And these engines would still be in production under the Merc name if the emission standards had remained the same.
Thanks, FDEP!

Re: New to me

I grew up skiing behing a 16 ft Orlando Clipper (a tri-hull and very light) powered by a Chrysler 70. My dad bought it new in 1970 and back then it was a horse. We ran the ****ens out of that boat - many days stopping only to refuel (large family of skiers). It pulled 7 skiers out of the water albeit most were kids. the motor never gave him any problems until the top cylinder went in 1979. He rebuilt it and ran it for many more years (until 1984) and he sold it. Saw the boat on the alke over the 4th still running and looking good. The current owner hasnt had any problem with it either. He sold it b/c I got a boat and he went to a pontoon boat.

From what I have seen of the Chrysler 70 (and I have seen oters with the same motor to include a pontoon boat that is on the lake with one on it) it is a good motor. Im not ready to jump on the band wagon labelling them and Force as pieces of junk. I will admit they may need a bit more TLC but thats about it.

Deerdog
