Water should flow out within the first 10 seconds of motor start-up. Not all the water runs through the thermostat. Some water will always be flowing through the motor, regardless of whether the thermostat is open or not. Make sure the lower leg is buried well above the bulge that houses the water pump at the base of the exhaust housing. The water pump is not self-priming and needs to be submerged to start pumping. Also, as a matter of course, it is ALWAYS a good idea to replace the impeller on a motor that is new to you unless the previous owner documents it as having been done recently.
Thanks.
I ordered a new water pump last night iBoats. It should be here tomorrow or the next day. I will just have to wait till then, I might start the motor one more time and let it run 20 seconds or so and see. I shut it down with in 10 seconds, for fear of blowing the motor.
Thanks again, I am new to this outboard stuff. I have mechanic ability, just need to know what I am looking at then can figure stuff out on the fly. I did download the service manual for this motor. Good information, but it is not the complete book. So I am going to just order the one from here.
