"New To Me Boat" Enigma

Why don't we just say "I bought a new boat" (meaning brand new), or
"I bought a second hand boat" (meaning used).
This "new to me" sounds like a used car salesman selling a "pre-owned" gem that passed the 66 point checkup!

When I first joined it would have been. "I bought a piece of junk boat cause I don't know anything about boats, I did no research and it was an impulse buy plus I paid too much."

i think the term "new to me" is a good way of expressing the fact that you bought a "used" boat, but its new to me. I've never found that to be confusing or misleading. Just my opinion

I bought a used boat, knowing the transom was shot and the floor was already removed. I could see the wet foam, the outboard and trailer was in great shape, I really liked the boat and had done fiberglass work before. I guess "new to me" could also mean "new period"

I use this expression at work when we use recycled parts on equipment, "brand new used". It gets a laugh.

I think here might be a clue. When I refer to my "new" boat, whether in speaking or writing, I mean that the boat is new to me and not necessarily right-off-the-dealer's-showroom-floor new. To say that a piece of property is "new to me" simply makes it clear that while it may be my latest acquisition, I'm not the first owner of it.

Having said that, I wonder what the reaction would be if a man were to introduce his bride as "this is Stella, my new to me wife"? LOL
