Hello Fellow Iboaters! I recently purchased this 1963 evinrude speeditwin which i am planning on using for my boat which i'm currently restoring(See signature). The boat is almost done so it's time to get this motor all up and running good. I have put it into a trash can full of water and it does not spit water, yet seems to run very well. I don't know much about motors so i was wondering if someone could help me figure out how to get it to spit water? I have read things about cleaning the pee hole out with coat hanger/weedwacker cord, but i thought i might as well just replace the impeller. It also seems to be slowly leaking gear oil around the propeller..... So i might as well get a lower unit gasket kit and replace all the seals too. Is this a extremely complex endeavor? I have lots of tools and am pretty mechanically inclined. Here are some pictures of the motor:

if the fuel lines are original, I would change them. Also, visually inspect the coil through the inspection hole on the flywheel. It might run fine in a barrel but cracked coils can cut out when they get hot. Other issues might pop up once your run it WOT out on the lake (don't do that in a barrel).

Looks like you got yourself a nice motor. Those old big twins run like champs. just make sure that you run it at 23:1

Re: New to me 28hp evinrude speeditwin not spitting water

Whenever I get a new to me motor, and that happens alot :), I go through the following items.

Step 1 is a compression test cold and dry. Tells you about the health of the powerhead before investing any money, and also gives you a baseline for future issues.

Pop the flywheel and inspect ignition. If coils original/cracked, replace, along with new wire. You will need metallic core 7mm wire. Dress and clean the points. If pitted, replace, then gap to 020. I test the condensors, but assuming you do not have a tester, so just replace them. They are cheap. Reinstall flywheel and torque to spec.

Now I pull the carb and give it a thorough cleaning. I have a wide assortment of parts, and change as needed, but you will likely need a carb kit. If you need help with this let us know. Then, as stated, update fuel lines to ethanol proof.

Drop the gearcase and replace the impeller, and inspect the housing, grommets and wear plate. Replace as needed. Shoot compressed air or water up the water line to ensure there are no blockages. You do not have a tell tale, that you can clean with the weed wacker line like you mentioned. Your spent cooling water will exit at the exhaust relief hole. By the way, if you tested in a barrel, was the water line up to a couple inches below that hole?

Now I change the gear oil with new crush washers. Pressure test gearcase for leaks. If obviously leaking, reseal.

Grease and oil as needed. Wipe down motor with WD40. Should be good for another 50 years!

Alright, Thanks for the advice scury knave and High trim. I just ordered a impeller, a carb kit and a lower unit gasket kit. I'll let ya guys know when they arrive. Then maybe you can help me install the stuff? I have the OEM manual for this motor, but it sure does help havin' some guys to throw ideas back for forth with:) . Oh btw, check out the boat i've been restoring that will receive this engine, the boat was an absolute train wreck and i've really been transforming it. My signature pretty much says it all, lol. Thanks again guys

Hey guys, all the kits have arrived. Does anyone have a guide on replacing lower unit gaskets and an impeller? Can i remove the lower unit and work on it seperately from the motor?

The question about the tell tale (pee hole) that era motor doesn't have one, it will just spit water from the exhaust. Taking off the lower is the only way to get at the water pump. First thing is to disconnect the shifting rod, unbolt lower and slide her down. The rest should be straight forward replace parts. For the exact procedure you would need a manual for the motor but it's actually a really easy job.

I have dropped the entire lower unit, disassembled the gears and cleaned everything with mineral spirits. The only problem i am having is removing gaskets and bushings. My manual tells me i need to use Special tools that i do not have. Does anyone know any Redneck alternatives to these special tools?

Re: New to me 28hp evinrude speeditwin not spitting water

I just used a $8 seal puller has a hawk bill to grab them right out. Be sure to watch how they come out, the prop shaft and drive shaft have dual seals that have to go back in the same way. Mine both "faced" each other. To get them back in I used the same diameter or a bit bigger 1/2" drive socket with an extension stuck in backwards to rap on. Then oil up the rubber seals and put it back together.

I just removed the drive shaft bushing seal, took alot of rednecking but got it done. Now i am onto the shift rod bushing/O ring removal, have any idea how i should do this? It seems i will need a long beater screwdriver that can be inserted to push the bushing out. Any ideas? Thanks

Your kit came with a new bushing for the shift rod, I've not punched one out yet in my repair jobs and none of them were sloppy or wore out to need it. The o ring in there I used an angled pick I do believe. Did you get a new shift rod boot too?

The shift rod boot is the brass part which holds the gasket and O right, right? My book calls it shift rod bushing. I saw a thing on one of these threads where a guy tapped the bushing and then put a piece of threaded rod into it and made a makeshift puller.

To remove the shift rod bushing on my fleetwin L/U, I used a spade bit of the right diameter shank. I inserted it from the bottom of the L/U up (obviously, the L/U was updside down at the time). The shoulder of the spade bit was smooth enough to catch the bushing. I then used a socket and a hammer on top of the spade bit (the wide part, obviously) to tap out the bushing. Be sure to note which way the bushing goes in. One of the ends has a slight chamfer.

Don't forget to use clean out any varnish inside the film bearings, in particular in and around the oil channels. Inspect the clutch dogs and the forward and reverse gears where the dogs engage for wear.

If you haven't bought any yet, get some gasket sealant for reassembly. I believe spec. is 3M 347. I used Permatex aviation gasket sealant. As far as cleaning the old gasket material, I find that mineral spirit solvent and a soft brass brush and some patience is all that is required. Don't scrape so as not to gouge the aluminium.

Re: New to me 28hp evinrude speeditwin not spitting water

Got this one out with a Romex staple and a hammer! Now i am trying to figure out how to get these things out: How do i get the shift rod bushing out and the other seal thingy(I suck with terminology)? I imagine someone has already made a guide of how to Jerry rig these things out, if not i will once someone shows me how to do it;)

Re: New to me 28hp evinrude speeditwin not spitting water

How about this idea, i tap the bushing and insert a piece of 1/4inch threaded rod, then slide a piece of 2x4 over the rod, and then a washer and a nut. I could tighten the nut and it would pull against the 2x4 and pull the bushing out. Anyone do anything like that? I'll check out the link James, thanks.

This is the tool you need to properly do the job. Other methods may damage the bushing.
