Hello all ive checked out this site for a while now and figured as soon as i got a boat i would join. Here is my story so originally i was looking to trade my sports car for a boat or sell it to buy a boat. So i did what i usally do on saturday mornings stalking craigstlist for the perfect boat at the perfect price or perfect trade. Boom after about 10 -12 emails there it was i emailed the seller, and then the waiting game began, i remember refreshing my email about 50 times, checking to make sure my internet was working i was really bugging out. Until finally i got an email back that says dont worry about the trade i just need it hauled away so come and pick it up. I call the guy when i talk to him he tells me that there is one person ahead of me that emailed him and that i was next in line so at this point i said to my self WTH almost. but then he continues on to say hey if the guy shows up and doesnt want it then ill give you a call since you were next in line then you can come and check it out if you want it to haul it away. At this point i said to myself what are the odds. Now im watching my phone every minute to make sure my battery is charged and that i have a signal.....RING RING.. immedeattly i answered the phone oh hey what up mom POOL awsome im on the way. On my way out the door now headed over to nanas ...RING RING Just lettign you know if you wanted to come buy and check out the boat the other guy didnt want it. On the way to the guys house im thinking hmmm i wonder what could posibbly be wrong with this thing for someone else not to want it? Why is it free? What does it look like? Finally i arrive i turn the corner and swear you could hear the orchestra in my theme song music. This Boat was a beauty not to mention the other 38 ft and 27 foot boat that he had in his backyard. I hitch it up after a few stories and info on the boat i was headed back to the man cave to start tearing her down and figuring out what was fist to go what works what doesn't work.

I get her home and immediately test out those 2 twin 125 force motors man those thing look awsome. after charging the batteries first try no luck ..... second try still no luck ..... third times a charm well we know those work. So first things first i was thinking of tackling this beast from the bow to the stern does any one have any tips or experience with this model?

An '89 bayliner, it's pretty much a given...

Just a suggestion now that you have what sounds like a very large and long project. Get your camera ready and keep it handy. Document everything you do so as you get into the boat you will have a reference. Pictures posted here will increase your ability to get great responses.

Couple things I would do immediately
1) replace impellers
2) Water test

As it stands right now, you don't have any idea if those engines actually work. Running in the driveway doesn't prove anything since there is no load on them.

in addition to water test, make sure the bilge pump works and dont go too far from the dock. most likely the stringers are long since shot.

You don't mention "paperwork". Hopefully you got a bill of sale; registration papers; proof of ownership, etc.
If you have all that then good luck with the boat:). If not, then don't spend any money on it!

Re: New to me 1989 bayliner trophy 2302 ---- for free

Free does sound might suspicious. I have an 89 Bayliner Trophy and the original stringers and transom are still perfect,so rotten stringers and transom are not a given, but something is up it seems. I paid $750 for mine with a damaged power head on the 150 Mercury hanging off the rear. It had a $1200 "T" top mounted to it so I wasn't too worried about getting stuck. The trailer was rotten from rust and had to be replaced but other than that it was solid and just needed a good cleaning. But you see, there was a problem with it that I knew of going in...the engine. Being a mechanic, that didn't scare me and I was able to bore it and put all new pistons, rings, bearings and all the wear items to make it basically a new top end and get it running. Doing things myself saved me enough to come out good on the deal. There is usually a reason something is cheep or free and that is where the "beware" comes in. All the things mentioned above should be checked or looked into before getting too deep. It could be a nice boat, but if the stringers are rotten, that's a big deal even if doing it yourself (a lot of time and money for supplies involved) If the motors have issues and you can't do the work yourself, that's big money. I would have had to pay over $5K to have my engine repaired. An engine will run with compression problems on one cylinder and since outboards are choppy sounding out of the water it would be hard to tell from a quick startup in the back yard. A static compression test on the engines will tell you a lot about them. You have to decide what you are after in all of this too, if you are looking for a project to have something to do for a year or so, that's one thing, but if you are looking for a boat to jump right in and have fun on the water, then maybe you should look at spending all the money you will probably spend fixing this one up, on one that is already "good to go". If I had paid someone to do all that was done to my Bayliner, and the price of a good used replacement trailer, I would have had over $7K in mine and could have easily just bought one ready for the water for that and started having fun on the water from day one. Used boats similar to mine are everywhere down here at boat dealers, with warranties mind you, for that price range. Good luck with it, I pray it all works out in your favor. Keep us posted with updates and pictures!

Saw this post and had a good laugh! That is my exact old boat all the way down to the MD #!!! I owned it back in 2003 and was just talking about it the other day. There were a lot of good times had on her! That was one of my favorite boats. Do you still have it?
