pics of what im working on and talking about here > http://s680.photobucket.com/albums/vv167/joshua2323/ New to boats. Got a 1986 Cimeron found a soft spot in the floor towards the back. Started digging into it and the wood was hardly anything at all. The foam was all soaked. What it looked like happend is the owner before had a hole in the tarp cover and the rain and the weather just came right on in, And eventually rotted the floor. Thats what it looked like and my theory. So i took the floor and foam out from driver seat to the bilge pump. My questions are.

1. It looks like there is a wax or something on the fiberglass do i need to get that off before putting foam in and what would i use? acetone?

2. I know i need to re glass the center board. The wood seems alright to me has 3 separate boards on the top that might need glued together. What weight fiberglass cloth should i re wrap this board in and how many layers?

3. With the foam what kind of foam is used here is this structural or flotation. I'm thinking both but not sure. Not familiar with foams but the foam was completely filled through the hull of the boat was all the way up flush with the top of the board that runs down the center and so is probably good support for the deck. What kind of foam should be used here, (Pour in foam spray foam)? and what weight? how much? and what would be the best way to put the foam in? and do i need all that foam?

4. How does water that gets in the hull get to the bilge pump i dont see anyway for water to get from inside the hull to the bilge pump to drain?

5. The deck im thinking 1/2 or 3/4 in marine plywood? What weight cloth should i glass this with and how many layers? And if possible how much epoxy do i need approximately?

I know this is a slew of questions. All help is greatly appreciated hopefully ill be floating in no time. Extra info. The motor is a 115hp mercury. The boat is 15ft 7in. can carry up to 6 people. If need bigger or more pics i can do that. I will keep updated on this project.

Hi Josh, welcome to iBoats forums and the world of boat maintenance, (aka financial purgatory).

First things first - We have all written a lot of info on this board about each and every one of your questions. Fact is we're tired of writting the same old stuff over and over again. Use the search engine and read and all of your questions will be answered.

Now there's just one other thing, (Bondo, you missed your shot)... BOATS DON'T HAVE FLOORS....LOL.... Refer to that area as a deck and you'll shed your rookie status much quicker.

I bet Bond-O (is it "O" or a zero???) can type "Boats do not have floors! Either a "SOLE" or a "DECK" (whaddabout a houseboat though..)
Freakin blindfolded with not one, but both arms tied behind his back...
Surprised it's not part of his sig by now..lol

Hummm.. houseboats, good question... nope, it's still nautical therefore it remains a deck until you beach it on terrafirma, put a skirt on it and tie it off to a pink plastic Flamingo. At that point it becomes a mobile home and you can call it a floor.

Ayuh,... I've just been trying to Help out JB,... It's His crusade, I'm just JB's little Helper...:D :D
Truth is,... I didn't / Couldn't read it before,... I'll do so, Now...

Josh,...

#1,... Grind it, Sand it,... Whatever,.. It's gotta be Roughed Up Smooth to adhere..

#2,... Everybody here seems to have fallen in Love with something called 1708 or something,... Read about it in the archives...

#3,... I don't use Foam,.... Period.... There's Plenty of reading in the archives about Foam,... It'll take you a Lifetime to read it all...

#4,... Limber Holes.... Every single square inch of you boat has to either drain off the side of the boat,..
Or,.. Drain to the Bilge to be pumped....

#5,... 1/2" plywood,+ a fiberglass covering is Plenty,... 3/4" is Way Overkill... Again,.. Read the archives for more details...

Josh,... Welcome Aboard,+ Thank you very much for the re-editing,...;)

Re: new to boat deck restoration have questions plz help

So i have done a lot of reading, I have learned a lot. But I am still confused on what weight of fiber glass to wrap the center stringer in, and the 1/2'' plywood on the deck. And also have some other questions.

1. So here is what i am thinking but not sure if this is enough or to much. Wrapping the center stringer and the 1/2'' plywood decking in 6oz cloth and than a 2nd layer on top of that in 1.5oz chopped mat or vice versa. 1.5oz chopped mat than a layer of 6oz fiberglass cloth. Please let me know what you think.

2. Also I am planning on using polyester resin i saw this stuff. http://www.iboats.com/Resin_Boatyar...4285833--**********.031271900--view_id.165305 My questions on this are does this stuff have wax in it? And it says "Must be used with Sea-Glass fiberglass fabrics to ensure proper cure." Does this really have to be used with Sea-Glass fiberglass fabrics to work?

3. Could you post a link of good places to get products from? The iboats shop has good products but seems limited. For example http://www.iboats.com/Sea_Glass_Fiberglass_Cloth_In_Packages_And_Rolls/dm/*******.134285833--**********.220221762--view_id.38152
that's the only Sea-Glass fiberglass fabrics in 6oz i saw and that is a huge roll.

Thanks for all the help in avanced it is very much appreciated!

Josh - use biaxial 1708 where you need strength (more layers of the same if it's not strong enough) and straight CSM where you need to fill voids or bond flat surfaces together. 1708 has a layer of CSM stitched to the back of biaxial cloth. It's like putting down two layers with one pass. Great stuff.

For resin, try uscomposites.com. I strongly recommend epoxy over polyester, but to each his own.

Stay away from sites that say their resin only works with their glass. That's just stupid.

Re: new to boat deck restoration have questions plz help

Josh, welcome to iboats forums. Guys, go easy on the dude's caps, punctuation and asking already answered questions! Remember back to when YOU first found out you had a summer of fiberglass pain and itching ahead of YOU! Yeah, most of this has been answered about a million times, but josh is deep into HIS problems now. Josh, do search and read though, like it appears you are doing.

All I'll add is maybe more pain for you. before doing all this, make SURE the transom isn't rotted or on the way. I'd hate to see you do all this work then find out the boat isn't safe or usable because of a rotten transom - maybe the most critical part of your boats structure and the most heavily stressed.

You can drill from the inside a small way into it in a few places to check then fill the holes with resin if dry. bang on it with a rubber mallot and listen for a "dead" sound (no expert, maybe others can tell you more).

As for the thickness of the deck plywood, I agree that 1/2" saves you weight over 3/4" but some stringer structure really needs a few more cross-braces to properly support 1/2" - just add them where it looks like too big a distance to to bridge with the plywood.

Also, yeah, the limber holes are needed so water can flow to the bilge. I was absolutely shocked to learn that many boats, even high end boats, were/are built with closed off stringer sections with no way for water to escape! How stupid. Water gets into anywhere it wants eventually - it's water! Drill the holes then resin the sides of the drilled hole so it doesn't start new rot there!

Re: new to boat deck restoration have questions plz help

Thanks for that info danond, and I will check the transom tmh.

I was looking at the biaxial 1708 but the price of it turned me off of it. But if i can get enough strength and be water proof enough on the deck and the stringer with one layer of that stuff that would be great.

So the question is

1. Can i get away with one layer of biaxial 1708 and have enough strength, and be water proof with one layer on the deck and stringers?

2. On the drainage system the only thing i can think of is drilling through the front of the bilge box, and inserting two pieces of PVC one on each side of the stringer at the lowest point of the bilge box, so water in the hull can flow through the PVC to the bilge pump. Now keeping water that goes to the bilge from seeping back through the PVC back into the hull i don't know how to stop that. But the water will eventually get out if i do that right?

Re: new to boat deck restoration have questions plz help

adding to my last post and questions/ so i think ive made up my mind. I plan on ordering tomorrow here is a list.

DBM 1708 Knytex Biaxial 38'' x 7yds should be enough to wrap the stringer once and glass seat boxes to the deck.

1-1/2oz Chopped Strand Mat 50'' x 9yds should be enough to layer the deck twice

435 Standard Polyester Layup Resin 6 gallons

4 LB Density Urethane Foam 80 lb kit

What do u all think? all this is at http://uscomposites.com/index.html

Still Leary about the foam and how drainage will work. I feel i need to fill the hull full of foam as it was before to have solid structure.

Does water flow through closed cell foam? If so the drainage wouldn't have much problem but don't see how it would get to the bilge if its filled full and water can not get around.

I read on here the idea to put plastic down on the hull than pour the foam through the deck, so you can peel the foam off the plastic, making it so the foam doesn't stick to the hull. Therefore water has room to flow around. Does that sound like a sound idea?

Ayuh,... That's but 1 option for creating a drainage path for the hull,..
Many have been talked about here,... Use the Search somemore...

However you decide to go,... Just remember,...
Drained water does no real harm,....
Standing water will Rot your boat.....
