After I asked that question I googled it. I found pages and pages of forum responses. Basically half the people say you have to unplug every time and half say I've never done it and haven't had a problem.

I unplug 99.9% of the time. A few times I forgot. The only time I ever blew a bulb was on a day I forgot. After that I remembered not to forget.....LOL.

I never unplug. The problem is if I unplug the connection to my surge brake solenoid is removed and I need to stick a pin in so the brakes don't lock up as I back up unless I wait until I am at the top of the ramp and then unplug. The lake I frequent the most is very busy and you really need to get in and out because there is a waiting line most of the time. I like to stage and get ready while I am in line so when it is my turn I can just drop her in and get out. Unplugging just seems like an extra step I don't need to do. Funny thing is, my trailer lights are 10 years old and they are sealed with rubber gaskets. I have only replaced a few bulbs over the years and never had any issues with blowing fuses or bulbs blowing up.

I have to go with the many previous commenters on the LED lights. They will probably outlast your trailer. And make sure you install LED side markers too. Then go fishing or boating and forget about trailer light problems.

I use to own a car that needed a convertor circuit to hook up properly to a trailer. So being how I had to design one myself (before convertors were everywhere) I also built in a 4P relay circuit as well. And when backing up the trailer at the boat ramp, I simply switched the toggle switch on the dash I installed to cut power to the trailer and no bulb issues ever. But they didn't have LED systems back then either...
