I am confused. I have searched, etc. and cannot find any news about what the dealer describes as the "new USCG required" steering for outboards...

Boat is a 1968 with perfectly functioning teleflex push rod style steering. All it needs to fit the new outboard is an angle iron adapter plate to make the connection and a coupla bolts.

Am I being "sold" by the dealer to replace a perfectly legal (although older) style of steeering????

Haven't a clue, but older steering cables can really corrode over the years, and some winter they lock up, and you need to replace anyway. Thing is, its a helluva lot easier with the motor off, or tilted up on one side. Probably cheaper in the long run.

Ayuh,........ I know of No Legal Requirements to Up-Grade your steering,.......
But,...
Like Robby says,..... Complete Helm,+ Cable is a Reasonably Cheap Up-Grade that's Well Worth it..........

If your cable works, does not stick, does not have slop, then you do not have to replace it. There are boats out there still using their original pulley/cable system. You are fine as longs as it works properly. The dealer is just trying to scare you out of some green. My steering cable is 35 years old, still works just fine. good luck...
