I need to replace the remote control box on a 2000 Evinrude 90Hp. It had an old style control box. I was wondering if I should replace it with a new BRP 5006180 or stick with the older style that it has on it. I understand I will a new harnass, but I am more interested in how it performs. The older style seems to be a bit touchy to adjust speeds in the 25 to 35 MPH on a 16 foot boat. Your thoughts?

Thanks

if replacing go with the proper box and harness, for the motor.

Re: New style remote control box or old.

Just a comment and don't know if it applies or not. I have had OMC controllers in the early and mid '70's. The early one was electric shift and the latter mechanical. Both were ok. Both had the lift type fast idle controller and mounted on the side of the boat (inner gunwale wraparound moulding, vertically).

I later got into Mercs and had both types, lift lever like OMC and quasi flush mount where you had to depress a knob in the center of the shift/throttle lever to get it to disengage the shift function and just provide throttle response.

Hands down, I liked the lift lever even though it was on control boxes which mounted on the side of the boat rather in the side.

Like I said, just a comment. Don't know if it applies or not.
