New Stiletto Bay Pro II results

I recently purchased a new Stiletto Bay pro II and here are the results as compared to my original prop (Mercury Vengence). Speed was taken with speedometer. Load was average and would only be heavier ( when taking guests out) but never lighter.

Goal -Good holeshot/acceleration and ability to cruise efficiently at slow speed. Achieve 5000 rpm at wot.

Boat -2002 Sea Ray Sundeck 220, 22', 4370 lbs empty, 21 dead rise.
Motor -Mercruiser 5.0 MPI/ alpha 1, 260 HP, Max rpm range 4600-5000.

-Mercury Vengence 14X19 3-blade(original prop) -4900 rpm @ wot, full trim, 51 mph.

-Stiletto Bay Pro II 14.25X18 4-blade(new prop) -4825 rpm @ wot, full trim, 47 mph.

The Stiletto did seem to have a little better hole shot and acceleration (bow stayed a little lower coming out (i think?). The stiletto required less additional throttle to maintain speed during a tight turn (while tubing). This was not a problem before but was better with stiletto. Boat felt a little more stable. Same speed to keep boat on plane. No difference in noise or vibration. There was no noted difference in lift while cruising or wot. Overall the props performed very similar. Most noted difference was the loss of top speed.

Conclusion - The loss of speed does not bother me much. However in this case I dont think the minimal gain was enough to offset the 4 mph loss. I think a 17 pitch 4 blade would probably would have worked better and put me very close to 5000 rpm (bay pro II is not offered in a 17 pitch).

PS. walleyehed/prop experts - What do you suggest? Wonder if Precision would allow me to try a different prop?

This is a great forum...thanks again for all the help!

That's 11% slip if your using a 1.55 gear ratio for the Stilletto and the Mercury, apparently the Stilletto could not lift your boat like mine. 1400 lb diff,( damm nice boat you have there) Stilleto allowed me to exchange for 25.00 and i did use a 3 blade, there was no difference in turning grip, it was 1.5 mph faster, i did not notice and hole shot difference but the smoothness and lift was quite different.

Does your cavititation plate run below your hull or above it, say a inch or so?

Hi Tail Gunner, I sure was hoping to get the same results you got. I guess my boat is just too heavy and long. Gear ratio on my outdrive is 1.62. Cavatation plate is just above hull surface.

That's 7 % slip, but no lift on the stern? that was the most apparent part if the whole thing for me and probably why i go such a speed gain. Maybe Walleyehed will pop in here, you may want post Jdeagro and see if he has some trim tabs that will lift that stern up. Did you notice it took less throttle to run @ plane of 25 mph and above, it seem's you did at least gain some midrange pop.

Could you trim farther out with the 4 blade?

I did not notice any difference in lift. I can achieve full trim with both props.

Walleyehed.....do you have any stilletto recommendations for me?

Anyone interested in a brand new 4-blade 14.25 X 18 Stiletto?

Perhap's before you give up you should give John a call @ 800-233-0194. Your boat is a very well appointed boat and very heavy, but you also get very good slip number's indicating a very good hull.

While the Baypro could not lift the 5000lbs boat by it's self, with the addition of the tab's the combination of the two should do the job. Nauticus will know the answer. Simple said less wetted surface will or should result in higher speed's and better econ, the tab's will aid you quite a bit in hole shot just do a search
