I recently purchased a new Stiletto Bay pro II and here are the results as compared to my original prop (Mercury Vengence). Speed was taken with speedometer. Load was average and would only be heavier ( when taking guests out) but never lighter.
Goal -Good holeshot/acceleration and ability to cruise efficiently at slow speed. Achieve 5000 rpm at wot.
Boat -2002 Sea Ray Sundeck 220, 22', 4370 lbs empty, 21 dead rise.
Motor -Mercruiser 5.0 MPI/ alpha 1, 260 HP, Max rpm range 4600-5000.
-Mercury Vengence 14X19 3-blade(original prop) -4900 rpm @ wot, full trim, 51 mph.
-Stiletto Bay Pro II 14.25X18 4-blade(new prop) -4825 rpm @ wot, full trim, 47 mph.
The Stiletto did seem to have a little better hole shot and acceleration (bow stayed a little lower coming out (i think?). The stiletto required less additional throttle to maintain speed during a tight turn (while tubing). This was not a problem before but was better with stiletto. Boat felt a little more stable. Same speed to keep boat on plane. No difference in noise or vibration. There was no noted difference in lift while cruising or wot. Overall the props performed very similar. Most noted difference was the loss of top speed.
Conclusion - The loss of speed does not bother me much. However in this case I dont think the minimal gain was enough to offset the 4 mph loss. I think a 17 pitch 4 blade would probably would have worked better and put me very close to 5000 rpm (bay pro II is not offered in a 17 pitch).
PS. walleyehed/prop experts - What do you suggest? Wonder if Precision would allow me to try a different prop?
This is a great forum...thanks again for all the help!
